Wooden train tracks - where should i buy from?

I want to get ds a train set for his 3rd birhtday. Am aware that there is a standard wooden one that can be bought in supermarkets / ikea / elc. Also is there a better make called Brio? Thought that perhaps some of you would have already done a bit of research on this and be able to advise me of what to buy and where to avoid etc.

Many thanks..

Ikea is compatible but not as compatible as other brands It fits but isn't such a good clean fit.

also check out TKMaxx for cheap fancy bits. Got dd the brio police set from there for £5 and a huge airport that connects up for £15.

UK toys affected by recall. It's mainly red and yellow ones, not the blue ones.

i got this for my nephew and he loves it here and it says it is compatible with brio and supermarket sets which makes me think they are all pretty much the same??

LIZS · 05/07/2007 12:20

Brio is the one tbh, Tesco/elc etc are compatible but Ikea doesn't fit the others.

I bought stacks of this stuff for my two children at about their 3rd birthday and although I bought Brio at first have found the Tesco variety no different except in price!! Have to say my two are now 10 and 7 and still get it out on a rainy day. One tip - don't get the battery operated trains until he is older or he will not play with the manual ones ever!

I would love to get ds a train set but am wondering if he is a bit too young yet, he's 17m and looking at most of the sets, they say 3yrs+. Any thoughts?

Think we had ours from about 18 months, but not much actual playing goes on until later.

We have some now. He prefers to bang them together or stack them.
It's mainly for DH's enjoyment.

We got big starter pack from tesco...and someone gave us ikea one...it fits fine together. I agree cheap track and thomas trains of the non-poisonous variety! We specialise in making tunnels/hills etc out of cardboard boxes...always a good rainy day activity.

ChasingSquirrels · 05/07/2007 15:33

my 17mo is just starting to play with his older bro's, but if we didn't have it already I wouldn't be getting yet. We got the first starter set for ds1 at 2yo.

rosmerta · 05/07/2007 16:16

Thanks, I guess I'll wait until he's 2!

ds had My First Thomas from a year - a chunky plastic set of tracks and character vehicles. tbh they are more interested in the trains than the tracks for a while anyway.
