Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much it costs to have one installed? The thought of doing it ourselves brings me out in a rash, dh has cse grade 3 woodwork, I don't even have that.

Is it hideously expensive?

Do you mean to get Ikea to install it? Probably cheaper to get a local kitchen fitter/carpenter to do it. Price will obviously depend on how many units, etc, whether you are fitting like-for-like or changing services around...

Be careful with IKEA as I've heard that it has no space at the back built in for your utilities. This means that you will have to cut holes for pipes / cables etc, and they are likely to drape across the back of your cupboards. Other companies like MFI have the false back which gives 3 or so inches of space for utilities and cables etc to pass through.

Our builder did mutter from time to time about that aspect of fitting an Ikea kitchen but I've got friends who've fitted one themselves without too much trouble so as long as the fitter is aware of it beforehand, shouldn't be too much bother (and think of how much money you are saving!)

Thanks, I guess I'll brave it and go and see them.

We have just bought a house and will have it for 4 months before we need to move in, so am taking the opportunity of getting as much done as possible.

I might just get them to come round and measure the kitchen up, I just couldn't trust myself to do it right.

MrsM I had an Ikea fitter fit my Ikea kitchen. It cost about £2.5k. The kitchen itself looked lovely (it was in the flat I've just sold) and BB is right you do have to have space cut fot pipes, but the drawers they do are brilliant - really deep, you can fit loads in them and they are really accessible. Where we fell down was getting the Ikea fitter to do the extras, like lighting, painting and the floor. We weren't happy with any of this stuff and ended up withholding part of the payment.

There's a download on the Ikea website where you can put in all your measurements and choose all the units you want. It give you a running total too. I know thats putting it in yourself, but its a good place to start.
