As I am feeling baffled and will probably need to use it alot for the first few months so want to get the 'right' one. Am currently looking mainly at the premaxx or the freedom sling but will consider anything really! TIA!

suedonim, I think the key is that they're strapped upright, they're not sitting upright IYSWIM or kind of dangling upright - there's no strain on the spine in the strapping you describe.

ChasingSquirrels · 26/06/2007 20:51

friend has a moby which looks fantastic, I borrowed a ring-sling which was good for teh first few months, also borrowed a wilkinet but didn't get on with it at all. nest thing at aroun 9mo when we went on holiday was just tying him to me with a large sarong.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 26/06/2007 21:11

Does anyone have any thoughts on the hugabub?

goodmorningday · 26/06/2007 21:39

How long can you use a Coorie for? They look nice and easy to use...
I have a Baby Bjorn, Moby and Wilkinet, not found any of them great so far...

LyraB · 26/06/2007 21:58

Used a Baby Bjorn with both of mine. Both perfectly happy in it, especially once they were old enough to face forwards.

kiskidee · 26/06/2007 22:37

oh, do post pics of you and your babyhawk, goodmorning.

kiskidee · 26/06/2007 22:53

here are some more manly baby carriers, bookthief. drool

Skribble · 26/06/2007 22:57

I really liked the wilkienet too.

cornsilk · 26/06/2007 23:10

I had a baby bjorn but found the fastening studs really stiff and awkward.

bookthief · 26/06/2007 23:11

They are fab! Love the retro tattoo patterns.

kiskidee · 26/06/2007 23:23

i am being sorely tempted by one myself.

TooTicky · 26/06/2007 23:26

Better Baby Sling definitely.

viticella · 26/06/2007 23:53

Over the shoulder sling definitely great, I didn't have one until 6mths old but have used Huggababy up to 20mths including 1-2 hour carries. Would love to have tried it out with newborn baby too. The freedom sling looks similar will probably do you fine.

For some reason (like a lot of other useful things) ring and wrap slings never feature in Mothercare or anywhere you can try them out. Why IS that?

Just bear in mind sling is not so straightforward in cold weather - you have to wrap up baby and decide is it going over/under your coat/scarf etc. Also it's harder to carry a big bag/rucksack as your shoulders are already occupied. Or am I making too much hard work of it?

horsemadgal · 26/06/2007 23:54

Coorie here, used it with DS until he was 18 months I think.

yoyo · 26/06/2007 23:58

Wilkinet. Three children. Fantasticaly comfortable.

FlossALump · 27/06/2007 08:24

Thank you so much for all your answers! Soooo many slings! I am narrowing it down though and what you have said has been very helpful!

i would love to go nosy around thissummer sling show

FlossALump · 29/06/2007 09:51

Ah, thats tomorrow which also happens to be the day of my friends wedding! Not sure that takes precedence over her!

For budget and adjustability I'm going to give the freedom sling a go. Thank you for all your help, it helped make all the issues about slings clearer!

I had a wilkienet and while I agree it was supremely comfy, from birth right up to big hefty toddler, I did find it bloody awkward to put on in a hurry or to put on while out and about (ie after transferring baby from car seat in a dark, wet, cramped car park into sling)

bookthief · 29/06/2007 14:33

Floss, I have this sling in blue basically unused, never taken outside since I didn't get to grips with it and ended up using the baby bjorn and coorie fleece pouch instead.

I would sell it to you for £15 inc p&p if you were interested.

MrsFish · 29/06/2007 14:50

I saw a mum in mothercare with a babsling i went up to her and asked her how it was as \I was considering going that route, and she couldn't praise it enough.

A friend also has the coorie and she swears by it. My only concern is that I tried it and it seemed quite constricting, anyone used one over winter when you need to wear more clothes, is it still comfortable to use?

suzi2 · 01/07/2007 21:30

I had a wilkinet for DS and thought it was great. Until I tried other types of slings! I have had a fair bit of use out of my Ellaroo LP ringsling - when DD was teeny and for hip carrying DS when he's tired walking. But DD is now almost 5 months and doesn't want to go in it at all. I also have a woven wrap (storchenweige) which I have front carried DD in but only at home as I haven't got right to grips with it. And recently bought an Ellaroo Mei Tai for both DD and DS which is great.

If I was doing it all again I'd get a pouch sling (like the coorie) for the early days and toddler hip supports. A stretchy wrap like the Moby for the first 6 months. And a mei tai from 6 months onwards.
