those little farmyard animals you get in big tubes are good - and a balloon of course, party blower to annoy parents, and i put in a chunky felt pen too. no sweets, just cake in napkin.

Joanne69 · 01/09/2004 15:43

small cheap musical instruments, my daughter got a flute in a party bag from a 2 year old and loved it.

xoz · 01/09/2004 15:45

NOT yoyo's. They drive me batty, they can't do them and just end up wanting to wrap them around their necks.
Also not too much stuff, coz they want to eat it all immediately. 2 or 3 food items is plenty including the cake IMO

I have just made up DD's and I have put in a tub of Toys R Us own Brand play dough |(about £5 for 12 tubs - big tubs too!) and a couple of little bars of chocolate. Oh, and a thing you blow and makes a noise. And a couple of balloons.

oh and i did a kids stories casette (mr men i think)as the prize for pass the parcel - easy to wrap.

Kayleigh · 01/09/2004 15:53

sorry to disgree with xoz but I really don't think sweets/chocolate are necessary in a 2 year olds party bag. A couple of small toys. a balloon and a piece a cake and they will be very happy.

CountessDracula · 01/09/2004 15:58

I have:

Animal finger puppets (is jungle animal party!)
Jungle pencils
Little bubbles things with animal heads on top
Mini bags of maltesers
jelly babies

xoz · 01/09/2004 16:00

I agree with you Kayleigh. I personally think that food, apart from a bit of cake, is not really necessary either. They usually have so much crap at the party and then want to at the party bag stuff too!!!!
However I've never been to a party where the party bag hasn't been stuffed full of sweets and plasticy dodgy toys. SO I guess I was saying if you're going to do it, don't put in too much food. Sorry to give the wrong impression.

The best idea I've heard of was from a friend who went to a party where all the kids were given a gift of a small lego set and a piece of cake and nothing else. I reckon a proper toy and a piece of cake would be much better than the rubbish toys and tons of sweets we usually seem to get!

Argos to a set of 24 small pots of play dough and and 21 cutters, scisorrs, rolling pins, etc for £9.99. They could have a pot and a cutter each and that would do at least 20 kids. You can buy some small magic painting books through Baker Ross to, they are great.

Hulababy · 01/09/2004 16:10

I put in:

balloon
bubbles
toy car for the boys/tiny baby doll for the girls (yep, stereo typing I know but I knew the children who were coming)
mini pack of white buttons or mini bar of milk chocolate
plastic music instrument
cake

Gem13 · 01/09/2004 16:26

I didn't do party bags for birthdays 1 or 2. Played pass the parcel and everyone got a different gift in that (it was rigged but they didn't figure it out, even the bright 4 year olds!).

So they didn't go home empty handed but they didn't have a ton of sweets or junk either. One reasonable (£2 max) gift. Cake they ate during the party.

Our parties are pretty low key. Decided that was the way to go until we are forced to do something more expensive!

Don't want to sound too miserly. DS had a good time and we did too.

Moomin · 01/09/2004 17:01

This year we will be mostly having:
plastic fish from tube of assorted fish
glitter pen
novelty rubber
tiny toy car
(all of the above from the pound shop)
fairy cake (because my dad makes them!)

  • maybe a packet of raisins
SoupDragon · 01/09/2004 17:10

Don't put uninflated balloons in small children's party bags. I still hate DS1 (5) getting them because I think they're dangerous when the aforementioned small child tries to blow them up themselves.

I also despise the plastic cr*p and this year went for felt pens from Ikea (or crayons for littlies) and an assortment of things to colour in from Baker Ross. I also printed off some teenage mutant ninja turtle bookmarks to tie the bag inwith the theme. I always put a small packet of chocolate buttons or similar fun sized bar (always just chocolate though, no caramel or other stuff)as they are generally the most inoffensive sweet. If a child has allergies/intolerances then I'd change the sweet item but chocolate tends not to have colourings or flavourings in it. Books from the book people are good value.

I'd much prefer on "quality" item than lots of plastic cr*p. My DSs OTOH are happy with anything

SoupDragon · 01/09/2004 17:10

one "quality" item
