Books to prepare 2 year old DD for arrival of new baby

Hi All,

Just looking for some advice really. DD is 2.3 and baby number 2 is due at the beginning of November. I am trying to do as much as I can now to prepare her for the new arrival and thought that a book or two about what it will be like would help. I know there are books like this on the market, but wanted to ask advice about the best ones to get, in your opinions.

Any help gratefully received - and if you've got any more tips on preparing a toddler for a new baby, please let me know.

Thanks

there's a lovely one called There's a House Inside my Mummy
here's a link and some other book ideas too

I really liked Rosies's babies - my DD who was just under 2 when DS arrived used to love this book.

PandaBear when ds was 18 months his sister came along and and we liked "The New Baby" an Usbourne publication...letting her go shopping with you and choosing and carrying nappies/ sleepsuits etc...helping the baby room(if you will be able to have one) and I used to let ds kiss my bump and feel the kicking and he helped a lot with the nappy changing (I mean stood and watched)...hope this helps a little!

Ds was 2+8m when dd was born. He loved a book called 'Tom, Ally, and the New Baby' by Beth Robbins. Published by Dorling Kindersley it is part of their 'It's OK!' series and was only £2.99. It's quite long to read but he really got into it and is still popular 18 months on. It's about a family of cats which may be why he prefered it to other similar books we bought at the time.

We loved Za-Za's Baby Brother, which was ideal for ds (just 18 months and still mostly a baby himself when dd was born) but it might be too a bit too simple for an older or more aware sort of child. It's on bundle's link.

binkie · 31/08/2004 12:37

Oh, interesting re BooMama's post: Za-Za's BB is about a family of zebras, so again maybe the non-human element makes it all a bit easier to take in?

Agree with Hausfrau - dd loved this when I was expecting ds and she was just under 2 then.

My daughter liked Topsy and Tim and the new baby. It also shows breastfeeding and minor jealousy.

codswallop · 31/08/2004 14:03

KateandtheGirls · 31/08/2004 14:12

My daughter was 2 1/2 when her sister was born. A couple of books I used to read with her (and which she loved) were What shall we do with the boo hoo baby? and Waiting for Baby

PandaBear · 01/09/2004 14:05

Thanks to everyone for all your help on this. Coddy, if you really don't mind parting with your book, I'd love to take you up on the offer! Thanks.

Pandabear I stated a thread like this a few months ago. I will have a look and see if I can find it . .

Can't do links (really should learn!!)

almost40 · 01/09/2004 14:39

We liked 'I'm a Big Sister' and 'A Baby for Grace'. We also got a couple of others, but they weren't as popular with DD1.

pabla · 01/10/2004 13:14

My son loved ZaZa's Baby Brother too (by the same person as does the Maisy books)

unicorn · 01/10/2004 13:17

'Sophie and the Winter baby'
lovely lovely book, but always makes me cry!!!

lulupop · 01/10/2004 14:28

there's a new one in waterstones called where did that baby come from? which ive just bought for my goddaughter (who's getting a new baby brother even as i type!)

it's lovely

Paula71 · 01/10/2004 21:29

For some reason SIL gave us a book about an older brother finding out that he could do things his little baby sibling couldn't. It is somewhere up in ds twins bookshelves and if you want I can send it to you.

"A Special Something" is another one.
