Well I've finally got round to buying a 2.5 tog grobag for ds (aged nearly 3 months) and will start using it soon. But the little thermometer that comes with it suggests bodysuit and pyjama tops only for 18C-ish and higher. Do you really do this or is the usual combo of a bodysuit and babygro ok - I've got loads of them and don't particularly want to buy pyjamas as well.

for 18 degrees i would put at least a baby gro on

just adjust layers inside the bag according how hot they feel - doesn't really matter what they are wearing - just nothing too thick. Ours often had a t-shirt with a babygro over the top (or pyjamas) and if very cold then a thin jumper as well, sometimes socks - you will get a feel for it.

don't worry about buying p.j's.
Mine had vest and babygro on inside grobag at 20 ish degrees. This hot weather it's been 24 and some nights she's just had a vest and no grobag- even though I had the one tog I found that too hot even. you can put a blanket (maybe a moses basket sized blanket) over the grobag- just don't put a quilt or anything too thick. You'll soon judge yourself

I wing it too... tbh, the temperature on the thermometer and the actual feel of the room/whether you need covers or not don't correlate as much as I expected!

Thinking over this summer, there were clear nights (for us adults) where we needed our thin duvet on at 26C and others where we were sweltering under a sheet and it was 24C.

I read somewhere (can't remember where, sorry) that a good way of telling if your baby is too hot is to feel their ears. They should feel slightly cool to the touch, whereas their head will be slightly warmer. If their ears are warm, chances are they could do with a layer removed.

The thermometer that comes with it is wrong imo! If I had believed it, which I didn't, I'd have had dd wrapped up far more. As it was I only noticed the temp on the thermometer because it fell on the floor when I took the Grobag out of its packet and in our house once something's on the floor it stays there for ages. I'd say see whether she wakes up or not and how you think she feels. In this weather our dd is sleeping in just a babygro since it's still quite warm and our house is too. When she was 3 months (in Feb) she was in a Grobag and just had a vest on underneath but as I said, our house is warm. I'd be interested to see whether anyone else thinks those thermometers work. I don't think they're right (have had a couple as I've got a few Grobags.)

when ds was really little we had him in either a babygro or a popper vest (I guess that's what people are calling a bodysuit) depending on whether it was cold or warm. Now he wears PJ tops only. During the summer I have realised that just a plain T-shirt with no buttons/poppers is fine - so I don't think I'll be buying many PJs in the future - just simple long or short sleeved tops.

we've had a Grobag thermometer in Ds's room for ages (even though he's 3 now and well out of Grobags, haven't quite got round to getting rid of it) and our clock (a freebie from some foreign client of DH) also has a thermometer on it and they are pretty much always the same. It will depend on where you place them though wont it?

I don't trust any termometer as we have the grobag's one, the one of the monitor, a metereological station and the central heating termostat all in DS room and they all display different temperatures, I have decided to use the one of the monitor not because is better but because is the only one I can see at night so if it says 26 degrees we use the 0.5 grobag and a vest, 22 or less babygro. Obviously my house is never at 26 degrees but after a year of trial and error that is what I have worked out.

I check his head (and back of the neck) which has to be slightly warm with the hands slightly cold, if the hands are warm a layer should be removed. Hope it helps, though I very much doubt it...

Thanks all. It's getting a bit chilly now (hooray it really is nearly autumn) so I'll start experimenting tomorrow I think.

I did wonder about the thermometer as I've had one in our bedroom but it always shows 24c, whether it feels warm or slightly chilly to me. So I'll feel his ears then (good tip)!

Thanks again.

If Grobag thermometer says 13 I have body suit, sleep suit and a cotton long sleeve top or a pj top. At 15 I lose the body suit, and at 17 I lose the pj top but put the body suit back on. Hasn't gone any higher yet because it's still winter in NZ.
