It needs to be safe and reliable. Not bothered about fancy extras such as a/c, etc.

Am thinking;

Micra
Punto
Corsa
Seat Ibiza
Yaris

Doubt I can afford a VW as have about 4k to spend.

I have an irrational dislike of Fords and French cars based on my parents always said Fords are shit and Jeremy Clarkson says all french cars are shit. Comments?

Now I could be tempted by automatic windscreen wipers.

I have had 2 micras in the past. Loved my first which was a 1986 registration one. Upgrade to a P plate, about a 1997 reg and after driving for about 40mins would get pins and needles in my legs. Spent months adjusting the seat and got rid in the end. I'm hoping the new micras are different.

Can't drive a Honda as the seat would kill my back.

The seats are going to be another problem due to a serious back injury some years ago. I managed to get my current car's seat reformed to fit my back. But not sure if the bloke who did it still works.

I have a 1.1 l Getz, paid £6800 for it brand new, you could easily pick up a 2 -3 year old for within your budget. And if you are lucky it may still have some of the 5 year warranty left (not sure when Hyundai brought them in). Brilliant little car has been totally reliable.

I got a Yaris, 2005 model with 20,600 miles. Sporty type edition, 5 doors.

They knocked 2k off the price and sold it me for trade value because they know my mum

I have a 1.1 Hyundai Getz as well and it is absolutely brilliant. Great drive, very reliable and you will get quite a new one for £4000. You can get them in 3 and 5 door. Can't recommend it enough.

Another vote for the Yaris - I absolutely love mine and its fuel consumption is really economical.

Our ancient Ford is wonderful - the most reliable car we've ever had (the contrast with our supposedly wonderful Audi is staggering). Costs next to nothing to service and maintain, and the staff at the local dealerships are friendly, polite and helpful (unlike Audi). We'll definitely replace it with another Ford something.

We have a Peugeot 107 as a runaround, cheap as chips and no problems yet, but my god it feels cheap!

I'd not buy French given the choice but they were the garage that offered me the best part ex on my car (by a long way) and it os only a run around.

I'd plump for a Toyota given the choice.
