Double buggies for big toddlers

Still weighing up the options, but in the event that we buy a double buggy, can anyone recommend a comfortable one for a large toddler which is also suitable to use from birth for a baby.
DS is just gone 2 - already 3ft tall and 15kg (2 stone 5lbs). Baby due in 6 months.

TIA

Hi Pops, I have been looking (just incase ), at the Nipper twin 3 wheeler. I can't believe how light it is for a twin buggy (9kg I think), and the seats look very wide too although it says the whole thing will fit through a door (I know alot say that though).

Good luck with your search

My ds1 and ds2 have a 17 month age gap, and we bought the Mothercare 'Twin Alpine'? 3 wheeler double when ds2 was born nearly a year ago.

Ds1 still fits in it comfortably now at 2.5, weighing around 36lbs (he's a tall and sturdy toddler too!). I've yet to see any other doubles that look like ds1 could fit in them, they always look really narrow as if they would encourage round shoulders!

I have a Graco duo something and my toddler (sounds similar proportion to yours!)still falls asleep in it sp it must be quite comfy. Have used it from DS2's birth, it goes down fairly flat but not completely. It was quite cheap (£100) but after a year, is showing that it wasn't the most expensive one in Mothercare IYKWIM! Good luck - double buggies are a whole new minefield in my experience!

I love my Mountain Buggy. DS is now 2 (don't know height and weight offhand but he is 91st centile and solidly built) and DD 6 months.

We bought a carrycot for it for the first few months and now DD is in the seat proper. Both are very comfortable.

We used a friend's double Nipper recently (have a single which we love) but it was too small heightwise for DS and he was uncomfortable.

Mountain Buggys are pricey but we got ours through eBay. Well worth the expense.

i was looking at the mothercare one - the alpine whatsit
think the mountain ones will be the only appropriate ones really....
will look at eBay - good idea!

Just wanted to say good luck Popsy. My ds1 was also 90 cm tall, and 13.5 kg aged 2 .. and it was incredibly hard work with him in a double buggy. (I have just 22 months between them). I would definitely encourage you to continue to "weigh up" the options and consider other possibilities.

Gem13 · 26/08/2004 19:58

Do beware that the double Mountain Buggy can be difficult to fit in some car boots (it fits well in our Peugeot 306 Estate). Check the measurements carefully!

very good point gem!!
My other options include: a sling/buggy board combination. Use the buggy we currently have, attach a buggy board and also buy a sling. we can then either have baby in buggy and ds on buggy board or ds in buggy and baby in sling

What about when it is really wet and cold though......?

dd was a march baby - and there's no way could i have used a sling for her -it did nothing but rain for the first couple of months

  • i think your best option would be to visit mothercare or somewere simlar and sit your ds in a couple to see which is the best .

good luck

I am looking for a double buggy - preferably an urban mountain buggy for my two year old - very heavy and baby due at xmas ... anyone know where the best place is to get one?

Tommy · 13/10/2004 22:51

I think the Mothercare urban three wheeler thingy is quite good. My friend had it and it was lovely to push although quite wide if you want to get it in and out of shops. I have a Graco thing which is big enough for my big toddler but not so good to push. Good luck - the double buggy thing is a minefield!

fairydust · 13/10/2004 22:55

kiddicare
have a double three wheeler which includes 2 footmuffs raincover and rucksack for £143.99

Skara · 13/10/2004 22:58

the Mothercare one is good, but is sooo wide you spend your whole life saying sorry to people you bump into! Hence I'm still on the perfect pushchair quest...

Tommy · 14/10/2004 21:27

If you're still around pumpkinjane - just remembered... I bumped into a former pupil of mine who has babies the same age as me (how to make Miss feel old!) and she had a three wheeler tandem (i.e.one in front of the other)She got it in Index and so was therefore fairly cheap (relatively speaking of course!) She reckoned it was brilliant and I know I've heard before that it's a good model.
HTH

PumpkinJane · 14/10/2004 21:50

Thanks all for your input ...kiddicare is near to me so am off there tomorrow in search of perfect buggy...will keep you posted!!

nutcracker · 14/10/2004 21:54

I think the one Tommy is on about is a Kidz Kargo tandem 3 wheeler. Is is quite sad that i knew that
