What do you love/hate about your kitchen sink

I'm currently putting together my new kitchen. I really hadn't realised that there was soooo much choice out there. So what's a useful feature and whats useless or simply a gimick not worth going near. Can you really go far wrong with a one half sink in stainless steel with a draining board (what I currently have)

Anyone got a shaped work surface, with draining section shaped into it and just holes where the sink sits beneath?
Not describing very well, shall try a link

I have an old butlers sink.
Things break so much more easily in it than stainless steel.

I wish I had my old sink: a draining board each side, not just on one side - easy to keep clean, wipe up splashes, stack dirty pots etc. Also a 'sit on top' sink rather than 'inlaid'. You have to lean further over inlaid sinks and it gives you back ache.

Also - is the standard height the right height for you? Kitchen design seems to be based on 1930's housewives who were 4" shorter (or something). I am slightly taller than today's average, and when (oh when...) we have our kitchen re-done I will heave all worktops and sink a bit higher than standard.

For me a 1.5 sink is essential, it makes life so much easier when straining food and washing up.

I had a cheap white plastic sink in our previous kitchen and it was fine. A bit of bleach kept it clean and it never became indelibly stained.

I now have a stainless steel 1.5 sink with d/board which is functional but boring. Here in Nigeria I have a black double sink which I love and wish I had at home.

This is my sink - it's fab sooo easy to clean and looks great. Everyone comments on it when they see it.

babygrand · 11/06/2007 16:32

I have a large butlers sink, but it doesn't drain very well so I am constantly wiping it down!

PartyClown · 11/06/2007 16:37

I've got a stainless steel double sink, with full drainers on each side. I couldn't manage without it. And it's still shiny after 13 years.

Blu · 11/06/2007 16:45

Hang on to it, PartyClown - I don't think they make them any more

Lilymaid · 11/06/2007 16:59

Avoid white - bleach doesn't get out all the stains in the end, but it ruins your clothes. Also choose taps that are easy to turn on and off (I like lever taps).

Wills · 11/06/2007 21:00

Wow, Fab help. So avoid white and (sorry blu) avoid butler sinks as they break too much. Must admit that would really annoy me. I'm definitely pro easy life and no breakages .

Another question is... are Franke worth it? What about one of those weird ones with a built in strainer? I'm a tad sceptical. My mother has a Franke sink but she is also the living version of Hyacinth Bucket (Boquet(sp) from keeping up appearances) and a name is everything. She's seriously upset with me as I've opted for a AEG oven instead of NEF.

Furball. I like your sink but am a tad nervous. I have a large family room but have designed a small kitchen to go in it (cos personally when I'm cooking I like having everything in really easy reach) so we're thinking of going for a black granite worktop and I'm concerned this will clash. What do you think?

Oh and to whoever said measure your largest baking tray and make sure it fits. FANTASTIC. Seriously good point that I would have kicked myself about the moment I tried to put it in. Thankyou.

I have a fab villeroy and boch sink like this It is undermounted and I have black granite too, it looks great

Things I like about it

It is neat
It has a little extra plughole that you can chuck things down when sink is full, v useful for keeping dishcloth etc in too.
I got one with a special coating so it never gets stained

I can't think of anything I don't like about it.

CountessDracula · 12/06/2007 09:33

oh here is a pic of it fitted
Looks much better with black granite

dressedupnowheretogo · 12/06/2007 09:34

i love my round sink because

its too small to get dinner plates in so i have a dish washer

it matches my round drainer

i hate it because its scratched now

and mil rinsed the paint brushes out in it and i cant get the paint off

We have recently installed a black Franke Fragrant sink and it is looking awful with limescale! Cif doesn't seem to work - any suggestions please?
