Oh I'm going to watch this one too. I'm planning to get a laptop and like the look of Viao (the cheaper ones) and am impressed by the apparent value of Acer. But are they any good ?

lulumama · 09/06/2007 15:31

we have two

they are great

absolutely fab, would not go back to a non MAC

DH is gadget king and loves all things Apple..

lou33 · 09/06/2007 15:38

i have a vaio but it's power socket has collapsed twice in 2 yrs, and they cost a fortune to fix!

lou33 · 09/06/2007 15:39

although as a laptop i love my vaio, i just afford another 170 quid on it to fix a tiny socket!

SenoraPostrophe · 09/06/2007 15:41

they are very expensive compared to normal laptops and laptops in general are expensive to repair and upgrade. why won't you get another pc?

tuppy - my acer is running fine after 4 years, but I know people who've had problems with them.

tuppy · 09/06/2007 16:37

My reason for wanting a laptop is that my PC sits in a little boxroom grandly called my study...ds3 (3) when not at playgroup wants to be with me pretty much all day.

He isn't ignored of course (apart from now) but I'd like to be able to run my Amazon account - I'm an intermittently busy seller - do my photo editing, emails etc., without him crowding me out in this little room. If he's happy doing puzzles or even playing in the garden I can keep a dialogue going with him at the same time I'm "un"wired up to my laptop. Oh and I have the grand plan of writing a crap novel too. I've started but I'd get more done in odd bursts of time if I could transport this mstical laptop with me. And no I don't want to do the transcribing from a longhand notebook thing (though I do keep one in my handbag).

tuppy · 09/06/2007 16:38

Sadly I'd heard that too about viao. Was hoping it was a one off problem; they look fab. What about Toshiba ?

tissy · 09/06/2007 16:39

was going to get another pc, but have been encouraged to think again by my db, who is a recent convert to Mac from PC. He's a bit of a geek- and was amazed by how simple and easy to run his MacBook was. Also his dd has a 9 yr old Mac desktop, which still runs fine. My 5 yr old PC is like a snail and getting worse!

I'm using both a mac and pc laptop at the mo (one's a work one) and I have to say that the 4-5 year old Mac Powerbook G4 still knocks spots off the brand new Compaq Presario in terms of quality of the hardware (screen, keyboard etc), general performance and ease of use. Only (major) downside is the price, both of the hardware and software I guess!

There are also compatibility issues to take into account (do you share lots of documents with users who use certain software packages)? Although most Microsoft documents (Word, Excel) are in theory compatible you do get the odd blip where PC users using older Microsoft software can't open the new Mac Microsoft files. I'm not really up on this though, worth checking with experts if you can find any!

tissy · 09/06/2007 17:06

no, don't share many documents- tend to keep work and home separate, and have a PC at work. If there was a problem, could probably just atke the MacBook into work and plug it into my printer...

Fab. I have MacBook and we have another 'big' Apple computer.

Are gorgeous to use, very family friendly and easy to convert yourself to from Word. Get one. Make you feel good too!

Slim · 09/06/2007 17:29

Have a Macbook Pro and love it. Mine's about a year and a half old and still going very well.

jennifersofia · 09/06/2007 22:00

I have iBook and dh has MacBook, which I steal off him occasionally. Love it love it love it! Don't like using PC at work now. Apple really are light years ahead in terms of how they think.

I have an I book G4 and it's great. Less virus problems with a Mac too.
