Mobile phone handsets?

Really need to upgrade my prehistoric mobile phone (the teenagers in the shop actually laughed when I produced it). Trouble is, there are so many new ones and they all look a bit much of a muchness to me. I want one with a good digital camera in it, and some OK ringtones, but apart from that don't really care. I;ve always had Nokias before so I suppose I have a slight preference for them. Can all you non-technophobe ladies give me some tips?

do you want pay as you go and what sort of money do you want to pay? also what network do you want to be on?

lulupop · 23/08/2004 09:28

Well, am currently on a contract (about £20/month) with Vodafone, but am sure I could get a better deal somewhere. Whenever I start asking about the different tarriffs they bamboozle me with information and I just panic and leave the shop with nothing again

are you at the end of your contract? do you want to stay with vodafone?

Titania · 23/08/2004 09:31

sorry...all the questions......just trying to work it out....im quite good with mobile phone stuff cos I know someone who has got a mobilw phone shop and i have helped her out sometimes

woodpops · 23/08/2004 09:36

What do you get for your £20 a month with Vodaphone????

lou33 · 23/08/2004 12:51

My Nokia 7250i has a nice little camera in it. It came free with a pay monthly contract through Orange. I went with Orange because we can't get recepetion for any other network about here. I get 120 any network talk mins and 250 texts for £25 a month.

i have got a samsung e700 and its great!! if you go on vodafone, its the e710 and thats even better!! its got a little torch on it and you can record little video clips on it!! i did have that to start but couldnt get coverage here for vodafone, so went to orange and got the e700

Titania, I can change my contract now (have had it more than a year) but don't want to change my phone number. I get about 30 mins free calls and some texts (not sure how many but I don't do text that much - life's too short!), and itemised billing, and it works out around £20 a month.

I really don't care which network I go with, though DH is with O2 so I think calls between us are cheaper if I change to them.

if you change your network or want to go to pay as you go, then you can take your number with you, even if you buy a new handset. If you want to take the 'free upgrade' that networks offer then you have to change your number and sign for another conract. what is your monthly bill like? do you usually use more than your free minutes? Also a lot depends on if you do cross networking calls.

I got the Samsung E800 last week from BT, you get 150 any time, any network minutes, 50 texts and 2000 minutes to call your home phone each month. It's £19.99 a month instead of £29.

Titania · 23/08/2004 15:53

thats a good deal woodpops.....how are you getting on with the phone? is that the one that flips open when you press a button??

woodpops · 24/08/2004 08:14

It's the one that slides up. It's fab. My new little toy. Dh keeps asking me if I want to swap with his E700. It's soooooooo yesterday!!!!

Titania · 24/08/2004 08:30

i like my e700

woodpops · 24/08/2004 09:37

I like the e700 and was going to get one of those until dh told me to get the e800. I think dh is just gutted that my mobile in a newer model than his as previously I'd always had his hand me downs, as he upgraded.

monkeygirl · 24/08/2004 10:11

I've just updated my old mobile phone for an E800! It's a great phone (although the one thing I don't like is that the battery standby and talk time isn't great but I was used to a lot more even on my prehistoric phone) but Woodpops, you definitely got a better deal than me . Still, I found that I just had to make the decision on the day as it seems there's a new phone and/or deal every week to better the one you've just looked at. Our E800 has probably been superceded already.

woodpops · 24/08/2004 10:23

I think it has mg. Looking yesterday I came across an E820. Can't quite figure out the difference but I won't loose any sleep.

lulupop · 24/08/2004 18:54

Well, thanks everyone, I have had a look at that e800 and it does look nice. Will be back to the shop this weekend I think... now all I have to do is work out how to extract something called a PAC (?) code from Vodafone
