DD is now 6 months and before I had her it always amazed me that mums I know always had at least 2 or 3 buggys/ prams. I couldnt understand why they couldnt make do with one. So when I had dd my mission was to only buy one pushchair.

I chose a stroller that lies flat so can be used from birht and its been okay but now I will have give in!!!! We do a lot of walking so are going to get a three wheeler. Have I started on the long slipperey slope ? Will I in 6 mths not be content with that either????

Help me wise mumsnetters - to buy a 3 wheeler- preferably with air tyres - but a smaller version - not a big massive ones that come as a travel system. Help me make THIS buggy the one to last . PLEASE.

We used a back carrier for ds1 when we went walking up until he was around two and rather heavy to carry. He's now a great walker himself (now six). I also was determined to only have one buggy and we got away with it. Otherwise you could buy a three-wheeler and sell your currunt buggy therefore still only having one at a time. Three-wheelers weren't really around when ds1 was little or we'd probably have at least considered buying one.

Thanks Aero - yes dh says we should sell the stroller when we get new one but I think it would be nifty little one to keep in the boot of the car - great for popping in to town !

OMG its started!!!

Ha ha, I said the same as you when ds1 (now 3.5) was born. Managed OK with one graco travel system until ds2 was born 2 yrs ago, but since then I've hit the slippery slope and gone through one cosatto pram (lovely but useless on anything other than flat surfaces), two chicco explorer buggies (just about still going but groaning under weight of 22 mth ds2 and one collapsed under ds1 on trip to zoo), and one utterly fabulous urban detour 3 wheeler bought as a cheapy off ebay. Oh and a double buggy for when ds1 refused to walk anywhere for the 6mths after ds2 was born.
Anyway, to cut the cr*p, the urban detour is far and away the best for everything from shopping centres to parks and even pushed it on the beach last week without getting bogged down. That's the one that's going to see us out, as the rest seem only to be made for babies and can't cope with heavy (and grumpy) toddlers.

Should say thta if you're getting a 3 wheeler make sure its got a lockable swivel front wheel. That way you can steer better on flat ground and just lock it for the bumpy stuff.
The fixed wheel ones are a bugger to steer in shopping centres.
And yes, you'll probably want a different one in another 6 months - damn those pesky pram marketing people!

Oh well - good luck cuppy whatever you do!!

I sympathise, Cuppy, I really do. We bought a lovely Silver Cross 2 in 1 when DS was born, and I smugly thought we'd do with just that. It was lovely, but without swivel wheels a bit tricky in crowded shops, so we got a Maclaren when he was 6 months. Then we used that all the time. DD was born when he was 2.5 and I knew I'd have to manage without a double buggy as DS is so heavy now. But the Maclaren was knackered. So we retired that to grandma's house and have bought a Jane Powertrack 360. I cannot recommend it enough. ALthough we live in a town, I go to the park a lot, and on long walks, and it is perfect "off-road", as well as being v nippy round the shops. It's extremely light and easily manoevrable, good looking, and DD loves it (although DS - a large 2 yr 8 months now - also can sit comfortable in it). Occasionally I use my old (original) pram, but mainly go out with the Jane. We all love it.

However, if this is your first child, you may want to consider the Phil & Ted's E3 3 wheeler, as you can add a baby seat to it later, if you have another child. There have been lots of threads about it here and people really rave about it. Certainly looks much more convenient than a side by side.

Finally, if it's any consolation, we have some friends with 6 kids who've been through 14 buggies!

I bottled it when DS was about 10 weeks - our initial fixed wheel Graco travel system was great for when a smooth ride was needed but hopeless for shopping and buses - two things that go hand in hand when I want to escape the hicksville town that I live in. Three wheelers are ace if you are going to walk a lot but just make sure the front wheel swivels.

Our new Cosatto buggy is a dream . . . I can now swivel on a pin!

Cuppy - I've got an E3 (having been through a mamas and papas 3 in 1 pram/pushchair and a mclaren techno), and now wish that I'd got it from the start..it's lovely to use and can be adapted to be a double..there's loads of threads on here about it if you search.

The Nipper is fab. We have tried various ones (before and after our second child arrived) and it's the one we keep coming back to.

Lovely to push and the toddler and baby both look really comfortble in it awake and asleep. Fixed wheel but I've never found it a problem. Neither child is a great shopper so although we do go up and down the high street we don't really do shopping centres.

Someone on here is selling one.

Mountain Buggy is good too but pricey.

Gem13 · 03/09/2004 20:50

here is the one for sale

but it looks like it might have gone...

The Urban Detour from Mothercare gets my vote. It's my 5th pushchair/stroller/buggy and I've had it 2 years now and love it. I desperately trying to keep it clean and neat now so that I can use it when baby no 2 arrives.

misdee · 03/09/2004 21:21

Mieow picked me up an urban detour 3-wheeler yesterday at the charity shop for £20. I am so happy i have one again. I sold my last one when i won a new 3 wheeler, but i found the new one so heavey and awkward to push. So now we have maclaren triumph (car and holiday buggy), graco citisport (currently used at MIL, but will get it back for going out in the car with new baby in march as it lies flats) and the urban detour as dd1 will hopefully be going to school in walking distance, and its sturdy and suitable from birth.

harrassedmum · 03/09/2004 21:53

I have millions of pushchairs, total fetishist. Started with graco travel system when i lived in avillage and did lots of walking, then got lilac paul vogel one which was better for public transport and had a neat little rain cover, then went back to a big travel system type, but not quite as big. Then had pram with toddler seat, have 2 strollers, handy for the car, and also 3 double buggies. Bloke thinks im crackers, but different ones are better for different things.

Just spotted msg re Nipper (single) - if anyone wants to buy mine see the classified section.

Thanks
Melanie
