Please share your thoughts on which to go for.

First of all I've got to say that I don't drive: for several reasons which I need not go into my wife is our driver. We have a BMW Active Tourer, with which we are very pleased. Ultimately it's got to be down to whether or not you need the extra space. The Active Tourer has three seats in the back, with three sets of Isofix points, but the central seat is not wide, and wouldn't do for three adults on a long journey, so it's more of a four-and-a-half seater. You've really got to see both cars and measure up the seating and the boot.

I'm reliably informed that the Gran Tourer isn't such a nice car to drive, because, by virtue of its greater length etc., it doesn't handle quite as nicely. If you don't need the extra space, go for the Active Tourer every time.

We have the 218i, and it's economical for this class of car. At 70mph on a UK motorway with aircon on, we get 48mpg. Doing 80mph on a French motorway (the legal limit) again with the aircon going full blast in hot French weather, we get 45 mpg.

Admittedly we've got the luxury version, with quite a few extras, but we find it very comfortable. Folding mirrors are extra, front passenger seatback that drops down (so you can put in a curtain pole from B&Q) is extra, lumbar support is extra. We also like the nicer sound from the BMW loudspeaker pack, not the very expensive HK one, and that is extra. Run-flat tyres are extra, etc., etc. All a personal choice, but the cost can soon add up!

We have the 218i GT

Love it ..the extra seats are so handy sometimes

Mine is a company car and for the few extra ££ a month it is absolutely worth it.

Only you know though whether the 2 extra seats would be useful to you.

A0001 · 24/08/2018 08:32

That being said... you can really only get kids in the back row of seats (mine are 12 and 9 but short) unless you restrict legroom a lot in the middle row

I've got a choice of two and the decision is really hard because:
Active tourer is cheaper but 2l engine which I don't want
Gran tourer is more expensive but 1.5l engine which I do want

We'd use the extra seasons maybe a dozen times a year.

It's only 23cm longer if the figures on bmw website are correct.

Well, we find the performance of the 1.5 3 cylinder petrol engine perfectly acceptable for normal driving. We considered carefully whether or not to get the 2.0 4 cylinder, and there seemed to be quite a hit with regard to fuel economy, so we thought we'd get the 1.5 unless it seemed gutless on an extended test drive - which it didn't. Will it cruise all day at 80 on a continental motorway without busting a gut: yes. Will it accelerate briskly if required to get one out of trouble: yes.

From what you say, of the two vehicles you have your eye on, the GT seems to meed your needs better than the AT on all grounds except cost. So you have a decision to make as to whether the extra cost is worthwhile to get the vehicle that suits you best.

I've gone for the 1.5 GT, quite pleased. 17 plate, 6000 miles, £17k.

Ah I'm having a wobble. Is it too big?!

I changed my mind and I'm glad. After a second test drive, the gran tourer just feels like a minibus and the boot seats are useless to anyone age 12+ at most.

So I've got a 67plate active tourer msport

I'm sure you'll enjoy that! I don't know the MSport models - is yours petrol or diesel?

TheFairyCaravan · 25/08/2018 15:38

We’ve got an Active Tourer. Ours is the 220d Lux model. It’s automatic because I can’t drive manuals anymore due to my health but it’s incredibly economical. We can get almost 600 miles to a tank of diesel. We’ve only had ours a month but we absolutely love it.

Enjoy yours.

rainsbows · 25/08/2018 16:32

Msport I believe is the top spec after luxury. Ive gone for 1.5 diesel as I don't require a large engine

Did you test drive the MSport over bumps?

If it has MSport suspension, it's a very firm ride which isn't always the most comfortable

Glad you're pleased though, the 2 series is really nice car.

teacherspets · 08/09/2018 18:14

I love love love my new car!!!

A0001 · 08/09/2018 20:38

Little name change there?

If so, I’m really glad you like it.
