Why arent cot bumpers recommended if baby can sit unaided?

DS keeps sticking his legs through the bars of his cot when he is asleep and then gets stuck and screams when he wakes up! Was going to get a bumper to run along the side but everywhere Ive looked it says only to use until child can sit unaided. I just wondered why this is - is it just because they might be able to pull it off (in which case I can tie with lots of double knots) or is there another reason?

I think it's in case they start using it to pull themselves up on and/or as a foothold to climb out of the cot.

Grobag?

DS did this for a while but soon figured out out to get the back out again.

We bought one before DD was born but were then scared to use it in case her head went against it & she overheated.
We STARTED to use it when she could already sit up and she never took any notice of it. We too put it along the bars to start off with but eventually put it round the bed head. Its just come off now that we have taken the bars away.

If you just want to discourage him with an optical illusion, put the cot bumper along the length of the cot but on the outside not inside iyswim..?

I was always too scared to put it inside the cot anyway so it went along the outside against the wall so could still be seen through the bars.

Thanks - he does have a grobag normally, but its so hot in his room in the evenings lately (25+ degrees) that he just wears a sleepsuit or vest. Hopefully he will learn how to get his legs unstuck by himself soon - at the minute he sticks them out right past his knees (which are quite podgy) and even I have trouble getting them out again!

iwould - you can get a grobag in a 0.5tog which is suitable for very hot nurseries, it's really just a sheet, no filling.

They are on sale for £22 at babycurls.co.uk

It's in case the baby decides to make a bid for freedom by using it as a step to clamber out of the cot with.

I think you can get mesh bumpers for just this eventuality. Won't withstand being stood on but stop him getting his legs caught.
