How well does your stop start work?

I’m really disappointed in mine. My average journey is 4 miles. I don’t do a huge amount of motorway driving, but have just done a 200 mile each way journey, and it’s worked after for that a couple of times, then stopped working again.

I only get rare stop start in summer months, never winter. Friend with a merc has stop start that never fails to work. Their average trip for work is probably 9 miles, with shorter journeys in between.

Just wondered if my experience is typical?

I did complain and ask the garage I bought it from to check it out during service, but they said you need 78%battery for it to work and mine is at 68%. Which explains things but I’m still disappointed

Mine is fine. Although slightly random sometimes. Works less often in winter but that's because the heating is always on.

Ours stopped working for a while and we got an "auxiliary battery malfunction" error. We don't drive the car enough though and I think it just wasn't charging enough. So the stop start and the hold feature stopped working until we did a big journey and it charged up the battery again.

Why is your battery so low? If that's that reason then I'd be looking at getting the battery sorted.

Mine doesn't kick in straight away. I normally have to put handbreak on or open a door!

It’s the constant little journeys I would imagine. Also air con uses tonnes of power. My air con goes off when the stop start cuts the engine.

Shadowboy · 18/08/2018 22:10

Mine is great- but as explained in my manual it won’t work when engine cannot work at peak performance- eg when the engine is still cold; or if the car comes to an abrupt stop.

Sometimes the engine turns itself back on if the air con is on and we are sat at traffic lights for more than 3 min. It’s always worked though when it should. What car is it? Ours is a Land Rover.

Tbh stop start is really annoying. My car does this at the most inconvenient times, like if I'm trying to turn right, and there is a real lag to get going again. I turn it off most of the time. I honestly think it is a gimmick or a con and just car manufacturers trying to look environmentally conscious - surely it must use more fuel with all the stopping and starting than it would just ticking over?

Agree with washewihersen. My new car has this feature and I hate it. I'm planning to spend time tomorrow with the manual to find out how to turn it off.

TomHardysNextWife · 18/08/2018 22:18

I must admit it annoys me..... I end up turning it off most of the time. Especially when you're at a roundabout waiting to pull off. And it turns the air con off!

Mine works really well. I've never had any problems with it, winter or summer, it kicks in straight away.
My dh's doesn't work as well. I notice the difference when I drive his car.

AlexaAmbidextra · 01/10/2018 19:40

I turn mine off. Can’t stand it.

SoyDora · 01/10/2018 19:42

Mine always works. I hate it though, and usually turn it off. DH turns it back on.

A 4 mile commute your car wil barely get warm enough and charged enough for the stop start to kick.

Mine work really well but have a 23 mile commute and only usually two places where i stop long enough to use it.
