I hope to get a small car, nothing new, i am on strict budget, but am thinking of going for a Polo.

Some of them are not in too high an insurance group, and as far as i can see they hold thier value well.

I tried to get a quote on direct line, but it said it oculdnt process my request, why I am not sure. The only thing i can think of is that sometimes my postcode doesnt come up on certain systems, as it is a new home/build.

any ideas where i can get a good deal?

confused.com is good for getting a variety of quotes. I have always found diamond or elephant the cheapest. Maybe try Sheila's Wheels as well.

if you are in union through paid work

(!) (i'm a wothm who thinks sahm should be paid a decent wage for all the work they do!)

then consider asking your union. dp used to be with norwich union who said they wanted to increase premiumns not decrease as per the impression given. anyway. he contacted his union and he got fully comp for far less than n/u.

I got a good deal with tesco, as a new driver. I went 3rd party and am going to do fully comp whem I have a few years no claims (touch wood). Some companies tried to charge me hundreds more than tesco, but do shop around. Also, you can get online discounts on the phone if you threaten to hang up when you get your quote and finish the transaction online. Always try to haggle them down.

Churchill are best for us at the moment... also check out Tesco for insurance coz they are good.

I'm with Directline, and have been for almost 14 years. I've always found them to be very helpful - especially when my bank accidently cancelled my car insurance instead of my breakdown cover , and i didn't realise for nearly two weeks

another vote fo rtescos here

elephant is cheap if you are in an urban area and/or young. They also have a deal where you can pay slightly more but build up your no-claims bonus much quicker, which works out better in the long run (providing you don't make any claims of course!)

I use confused.com and have been with RAC, Morethan and Diamond over the last 3 years, getting progressively cheaper each time. It definitely pays to shop around!

pirategirl · 03/06/2007 22:45

thanks for all these suggestions. will have a good look thru.

Try RAC but buy online as you get all insurance cheaper that way.

Also if you take RAC insurance, you get breakdown cover cheaper.
