Phil & Teds Sport with doubles kit

Caroline1852 · 02/06/2007 16:51

Have an 18 month old DD and new baby due July. Am thinking of getting a Phil & Teds with doubles kit. Is the Cocoon worth getting (I tend to have quite big babies)? WOuld an alternative pushcahir be a better bet t(he Maclaren is about 5kg heavier and the seats are quite skinny aren't they and to be honest I found it a bit unwieldy. What is the best place to get a Phil & Teds at the moment, I fancy a navy one.

I have the E3 my ds's are now 9 months and nearly 3 - has been a life saver and still using it if i walk far or ds1 is tired - always put the other seat on but ds1 often walks now. Had lots of use from it - Ds's are 2 years apart and will continue to use as a single for a least another year or so - as I sold my previous single. Never bought the concoon as was the summer and didnt think it was worth it just used blankets. I have the navy one too has worn well - I think the new version has mud gards and a recling 2nd seat - I got mind from great lengths for £340

NannyL · 02/06/2007 17:56

i dont think a cocoon is as necessary in the summer months.... (though a must have for the winter)

at work i use the (navy!) phil and teds...

my charges are now 21 months and 4.5 years so we use it as a sibgle now... but it is a fab double buggy.

I WOULD recommed the panniers though cause when in double mode thre really is just about no room for shopping or (anything else) in the basket!

(we dont have the panniers btw, but ive told my bosses that if they have another baby i would like panniers for the buggy!

louloubelli · 02/06/2007 18:08

Cocoons on special(ish) offer at mothercare at the moment btw - apparently £35 instead of £40 but not sure how this compares to web prices etc.

TheBlonde · 03/06/2007 08:58

I have a 2yr gap and the P&T has been great

Don't bother with the cocoon.
My 2 month old looks squished in it and is getting too hot if left in it too long now

I find the shopping basket is fine in newborn/toddler mode

I got mine from Oxford Pram Centre

NannyL · 03/06/2007 10:16

The blonde.... have you TRIED using the basket in 2 toddler mode?

you will find that the toddlers feat are practcally in the basket / if there is mroe than 1 tiny thing then the toddler will reach it and throwit out the buggy etc!

Caroline1852 · 03/06/2007 10:39

If the newborn does not go in the cocoon - what do you put him in? Thanks all for all your posts by the way - it is brilliant having access to people who actually use one rather than just sell them!

I have a 12mth gap and love the p+t. Not sure about cocoon as we had one[jus tput it on ebay] and while it isnt necessary for warmth it does add a lot of extra padding and oyu can open the top bit.

JennsterSlugSlayer · 03/06/2007 15:16

Hi Caroline, we are on the same antenatal thread. [waves] I have the cocoon, because I got it with the double seat and raincover as a special offer. It doesn't look massive, and was thinking myself that it might be too warm in summer, but like someone mentioned earlier, you don't have to do it up. My dd will be 18 months by the time lo arrives.

TheBlonde · 03/06/2007 16:24

NannyL - as I said, I have found the basket fine for newborn/toddler. Your previous post did not specify which double mode you had basket issues with.
Surely with 2 toddlers you can kick one out to make way for shopping

I am using a lambskin liner now instead of the cocoon

Caroline1852 · 04/06/2007 10:08

I will probably buy a pair of panniers anyway as I do a fair bit of shopping without the car. I think I will get the cocoon as it will prob save me having to dress my new baby in a whole load of other layers and as someone said it can be left unzipped. I also like the idea of not having to wake him every time I take him out/put him in the pushchair.
Jennyslug - Ahoy there. Do you know what sex you are getting this time round? I am expecting a little boy. I am just loving having an 18 month old daughter (I also have two older sons 15 and 11).
Anyone any idea where to get a good deal from on a new Phil & Teds?

Bit cheeky, but if you do get the P&T Sport package which doesn't include a cocoon, I'm selling mine as DS has outgrown it (he's a whopper baby though - 98th centile!)

It's only 3mths old, lightly used, immaculate, never used without a sheepskin, black Sport one, and it was a godsend, so much easier to get them in & out! I wish he still fit in it.

Let me know if interested

JennsterSlugSlayer · 04/06/2007 20:13

Don't think there is much difference between the sport and the E3. Think the sport has mudguards though..... I would look in your local nursery shops and find out if they are selling off any E3 as discontinued lines.

No idea what flavour no.2 is.

goodmorningday · 04/06/2007 20:58

i really recommend getting the cocoon...i had whopper baby in feb (10lb 8oz) and used the cocoon for about three months. when it was a hot day and when he was too long for it i undid the zips and tucked the flap underneath so that air circulated but he still had the padding and wasn't lolling around. he would sleepin it on our other sofa or on the floor so that we didn't have to take moses basket up and down stairs...now we have the sleeping bag...padding to lie on just do the waist straps. he likes being snuggled up in it with just a vest on if its a warm day. hes on the 100 centile and his big brother sits on the toddler seat above..hes three this week and we really do need it if were out for the day...when your child doesnt use the seat put your bag on it!

amazonianwoman · 04/06/2007 21:12

The Sport has a much better handlebar - it's height adjustable. The toddler seat also reclines slightly

The cocoon is also great if you are going to toddler groups / clinic etc and you have to leave the pushchair in another room - you can just carry them in - everyone thought I was bringing in a sports bag!

Goodmorningday - my son was 10lbs 9oz and DD is 3 in 2wks I've also found it a godsend, even though I vowed I wouldn't need a double! My non-settling baby even manages to fall asleep in the baby bit because it sways, whereas he never falls asleep in the cot part of our single pram.

goodmorningday · 04/06/2007 21:35

amazonianwoman...after i had baby no.2 i wanted a round of applause everytime i walked into a room...i was really chuffed i got him out...he look like a rugby player, red/blotchy.. with steam coming off..and a big cleavage! it was a bit of a shocker esp. because no.1 was 7lb3oz! (it does

when dc1 gets a bit whingy i'm so grateful i can pop him in the toddler seat...only thing is hes a bit cheeky and if hes in the toddler seat below he can lift the brake up and start wheeling like a super dooper wheelchair!! i have the mudguards on order to see if that halts his flights for freedom.
i know their supposed to be on top all the time bit if little one is awake he wants to sit up and he seems so little to be sitting down so low to the ground...i'll swap them over when hes bigger

amazonianwoman · 04/06/2007 21:44

Wow, you did well, I had an emergency section!

When did you stop putting baby in the lie flat position? I was just wondering how much longer it would be before we had to put the toddler seat on the back...

GreebosWhiskers · 04/06/2007 21:52

I agree about getting the cocoon. It's really handy for carrying baby around without disturbing him & if it's hot you can just unzip it. Also the lie-back mode always seemed rather flimsy without the cocoon in so I preferred it for that bit of extra padding & security it gave. dd3 & ds were both quite long babies (dd3 was 55cm @ birth & ds was 53cm) but it lasted both at least 4 months.

skibump · 04/06/2007 21:55

I'v ebeen wondering about P&T's, friend of a friend said they felt bad about lo being in the bottom once he wanted to look around, so didn't use it after that...what do you think? Don't want to only be able to use it for a few months!

ProjectIcarus · 04/06/2007 21:58

I always have the big one in the doubles seat. Outrageous innit .

wee one still gets reclined for sleeps at 9 months I just swap the seat about as required.

skibump · 04/06/2007 22:07

Oh, can you do that? I must have a better look

goodmorningday · 04/06/2007 22:13

projecticarus... i know but the woman in the shop went on and on and on again about the toddler being on top which i do understand (about the weight and toppling)but there is no way lo can go in the doubles seat below...anyway every other one i've seen do the same...toddler below and oxford is teeming with p&ts.

amazonianwoman...i started sitting him up at about 12wks maybe....have it fully done up zips etc and then undo top catch (probably all wrong but i have two happy children...who cares!) when he grizzles i put on breaks do clip back up and undo zips...tricky whilst keeping one eye on toddler clip toddler seat on top...blocks out the sun....no need for £30 uv shade and a blnket draped over the back!

amazonianwoman · 04/06/2007 22:24

Thanks

Didn't think there would be room to put the toddler seat on top with seat just unzipped. Will have to have a play

JennsterSlugSlayer · 04/06/2007 22:38

Caroline Sport for sale here

Caroline1852 · 05/06/2007 10:28

JSS - Thanks
Thank you all for your brilliant insight and hands on experience. I feel very definitely that I will get a P & T sport with a cocoon after talking to you lot.
Amazonianwoman - I am persuing a private sale of a P&T which has no cocoon but I have also found a new package which includes a cocoon from practical pushchairs website. If the private sale comes off I may get back to you about your cocoon for sale - unless you have sold it already of course!

Have just bought our 2nd P and T in anticipation of no3 and still love it! We have the Sport model now, and had the E3 before. The improvements on the SP are great and the basket is much bigger than the old E3, so there is room for a little bit of shopping along with toddlers feet! I hate the mudguards and have removed them as they make the pushchair more bulky when folded. My eldest also sits in the back and plays with the wheels and I worried about his fingers getting caught under the mudguards. As regards to the cocoon, last baby was Jan and 6lb so found it really useful and lasted for approx 5 months. HTH
