Where can I buy a changing table-come-chest of drawers?

I don't want it to have shelves like a lot of the changing tables, it needs to be a chest of drawers as it will be the only piece of furniture (apart from the cot)in baby's room.

I don't want to spend a lot - not over £100 if I can help it.

The ones in argos all come as a set of furniture - no good.

Ikea do one which isn't bad.

Has anyone seen them anywhere else?

mum2Ela, we just put a changing mat on top of an ordinary chest of drawers-never had any problems.

Mum2Ela · 18/08/2004 09:42

marialuisa doeasn't it move around if there is nothing to support it at the sides and back, or not?

I got the Argos one on it's own (ie. no other furniture). It's fab. Have they stopped selling them on their own ? I don't have the current catalog yet to check for you.

Blackduck · 18/08/2004 09:43

I can recommend the IKEA one - nice and sturdy and the right height....

hoxtonchick · 18/08/2004 09:45

We did the same as marialuisa, it was never a problem.

crumpet · 18/08/2004 09:54

we also did the same as marialuisa and haven't had a problem either. I was too tight to invest in something which would last a relatively short period of time!

hoxtonchick · 18/08/2004 09:56

precisely, crumpet. in fact, we inherited the ds's chest of drawers from friends, even better in the cheapskate stakes!

honeybunny · 18/08/2004 10:00

I'd second the ikea one too!

hana · 18/08/2004 10:09

we also put the changing mat on top of a chest of drawers and when she got too big and squirmy, I just put it on the floor or our bed

spots · 18/08/2004 10:12

yeh, the IKEA one here too... the one which has changiing table that flips over to be a shelf when those nappy days are done with. bloody genius...

Mum2Ela · 18/08/2004 10:13

spots, am I right in thinking the ikea one is the dark wood? Our cot is really light wood.

Has anyone seen the new ikea one which you buy the changing table attachment bit for the drawers and then remove it when you don't need it any more?

As others have said-we had no probs. But to be honest we only changed her nappy up there first thing in the morning-another reason why I didn't see the point of any special kit.

webmum · 18/08/2004 10:18

which Ikea one have you all got???

JiminyCricket · 18/08/2004 10:21

We got the argos one on its own but DH added some safety rails when she got squirmy and we still use it at 11 months (NB our nursery is very small so everythings close at hand and we don't have to move away to get anything). She's a nightmare to change on the floor because she continually rolls away and sits up, but on the changer she's a bit easier to contain!
Oh, and I got different handles for the drawers to match the nursery cos I didn't like the ones it came with.

Blackduck · 18/08/2004 10:26

I've got the Diktad one (its dark wood....) The top comes down as a changing tabel adn when the nappy days are over it hinges up to create a little shelf.....

Moomin · 18/08/2004 10:26

The one ikea have got now is slightly different to the one we bought 3 yrs ago but it's the same principle. It's called DIKTAD, on p258 of the current catalogue (although this will be changing for the new one at the end of this month). You can go online to view it at ikea.co.uk.
I wouldn't describe the wood as dark exactly, it's like an oaky kind of colour. It's 100pounds. Dd's is a chest of drawers now. I think they're great.

webmum · 18/08/2004 10:34

Is the ikea one large enough, the problem I always have with changing tables is that they don't have room for anything apart the baby on the top. With dd1 I used an old desk with changing mat, which was great in terms of space, but it killed my back and this time, I want something proper!!

clairabelle · 18/08/2004 10:52

have alook in your local paper if you don't mind second hand. I bought a mamas and papas one for £20.00 absolutely fantastic bargain of the year!

Blackduck · 18/08/2004 11:05

The Ikea one will take a change mat and a pack of wipes, nappy cream, (clothes, shoes, books, toy cat.....) . The nappies fit on the shelf just underneath.

prettycandles · 18/08/2004 14:42

Another vote for the Ikea table!

Juliehafrancis · 18/08/2004 15:12

You could always buy a chest of drawers and then have the changing table that fits on the cot? This is what I have done and not only is it cheaper but much easier too! You can get the changing table top bed thingy from babies r us for about £12.00

Paula71 · 18/08/2004 22:55

Was in IKEA the other day and that changing table is now £89.

If you add the shelves on top it still only comes to £118. I wish I had bought them, I really do but DH wanted to take SIL up on the offer of a changing table. She bought a crappy set of drawers. Typical!
