For ds so it's going to be a fortune whatever we get but hoping to minimise it a bit.
Needs to be good for towing too.
Any suggestions very much appreciated 😊

It's too subjective. What will be be towing, his age, your postcode, where it will be kept overnight, value of the vehicle, does it actually need off-road capability or do you need the kerb weight for towing etc.

Have a look at the known insurance groups, pick a low one and get a quote from there : www.parkers.co.uk/cars/insurance/car-insurance-groups/2012/february/car-insurance-cheapest-4x4s/

He'll be 18 when he gets it.
It needs to have off road capability and be capable of towing horse box or boat which both weigh around 2.5 tonne

So to tow 2.5 tonne, he likely needs to do his Cat B&E test or he will probably be over the kerb weight and ratio for most 4x4 vehicles on a standard driving licence: www.gov.uk/car-trailer-driving-test

SilverHairedCat · 31/07/2018 18:16

Sorry, too quick there!

Because the max he can tow is a combined weight of 3.5tcombined weight of, say the horse box and the car. Add the horse in, and he'll go over that very quickly.

My freelander can't tow anything much over 1.2t for example.

RibbonsofMarvelandSound · 31/07/2018 18:20

We know that and we've already plan to put him through his trailer license once he has passed his test.
Thanks for the heads up tho

Sorry, teaching you to suck eggs!

Do you have a 4x4 already then? Have you looked at what insurance group it falls into?

RibbonsofMarvelandSound · 31/07/2018 19:21

We have a Ford Ranger and a Bentayga at the moment.
I thought about a Ranger but couldn't even get a quote for him.

My mate has a Fiat Fullback pick up. Can't seem to find the insurance group for them.

SilverHairedCat · 31/07/2018 19:38

Looking at Honest John reviews, a lot of companies refuse to give quotes for 18yo for pick ups.

Maybe approach some specialist agricultural insurance companies? Contact the NFU?

Matilda1981 · 31/07/2018 19:41

Maybe go for a good condition discovery 3 hse; best towing capacity out there. If a discovery 3 is too much to insure look at a discovery 2 in good condition; tggeuvare very reliable.

Scrolblewomp · 31/07/2018 21:43

Anything that tows safely just isn't going to be cheap to insure, Adrian Flux May be a good bet for insurance as they're quite specialist.

elastamum · 31/07/2018 21:47

Maybe a volvo, because although they are expensive they have a great safety record and are pretty difficult to crash.

My 17 yr old drives a 2015 1.6 5 door V40 and it only cost me £700 to insure fully comp in the first year.

I tow 2 horses with my XC90, it is fab.

RibbonsofMarvelandSound · 31/07/2018 23:28

Specialist insurers are a thing I hadn't really thought of so I'll have a look into that.

I used to have an xc90 too, Elasta!
It was a brilliant car but unfortunately the towing capacity's a little lower than what we need.
