twiglett, I think 2.5 tog is the recommended weight for autumn/winter.
Have you checked out the bumpto3 website as they have a great sale on with lots of grobags under £20?
I would go for the bigger size too - my DS was in the 6m+ size at about 4.5 months as he was a biggie.
Other than that it sounds like a good buy, even for the warmer nights now and for next summer too.
GeorginaA · 17/08/2004 12:28
2.5 tog is for winter
1.0 tog is for summer
0.5 tog (basically the thickness of a single piece of material) is for when it's really hot.
The only thing I'd worry about the larger size is could they wiggle through the arm/head gaps and get stuck inside - but then I'm permanently paranoid, anyway!
pesme · 17/08/2004 12:45
Hi, you can use 1 tog in the winter. You just put more clothes on baby. Depends how cold your house gets in winter. If it gets below 18 I would use 2.5. But then you will probably get some wear out of it next spring/summer as well. I have one of each. They are fabulous btw, just feed baby and put in bed. DD is a real kicker so blankets just didn't work.

I've been using grobags since dd1 was a baby 9 years ago! At the time they weren't available in the UK, so was begging them off friends in Austria and Germany.
Countries that have been using them for years don't make a big thing about tog rating, and I never knew about it until grobags took off here. I've just used common sense: thick padded ones for winter, thinner ones when it's warmer, with varying combinations of long/shortsleeved vest and/or babygro underneath as appropriate.
It's not an exact science, so I wouldn't worry too much. Thin ones probably get more use than v. thick ones, as you can just put more layers on underneath. The same with the size -- unless the neck opening is so huge the baby could slide down inside it, I wouldn't worry. Some of ours are ridiculously long, but it's the fit at the top that matters.

Twiglett - Sammac had a few to swap a litle while ago - she may still have! Hopefully she'll see this. My ds seems to associate his with bedtime and settles really well in it - been using one since eight weeks or so - bought secondhand from baby shop! Not sure of the tog value, but I use common sense to judge what pj's to wear, if he needs a vest, or a blanket over the top.

Twiglett, I still have a couple left. Let me check them and get back to you.
Hi Aero

I'd be very interested Sammac if you have any others spare.

asda have sleeping bags for a tenner at the moment - 2.5 tog apparently although they felt a bit thin to me
prufrock · 18/08/2004 12:00
it's not just the material morrocco, teh proper "grobags" have a flat zip in the middle front taht does up from the top down (so it's comfortable and babies can't open it) some of the cheaper ones have side zips, which can stick into the baby.
I had thin and thick for dd, but gave away my smal thick one, and will not bother getting another - you can always add blankets on top as well as layers underneath (and that helps them to stay still more). And in a centrally heated house it should't get so cold that you really need the 2.5 tog
StripyMouse · 18/08/2004 12:39
morocco - I have used the Asda ones and they are fine. In high summer obviously dont bother on hot nights and wear appropriate sleepsuit underneath but for a tenner I reckon they are brilliant. They wash well and there is a little tab over the zipper to stop digging in. My baby seems more than happy in it and wouldn?t waste money on a more expensive one unless for deepest winter and/or camping
GeorginaA · 18/08/2004 13:03
Prufrock - not all the grobags are like that. I bought 4 grobags from bumpto3 very recently (but just before the sale, gah!) and they all have different style openings!!!
I can't think off hand what the other two were like, but the one we're using now is a side zip with poppers at the top to secure arms/sleeves (and I actually prefer this as I can get him in more easily without disturbing him and the zip doesn't appear to dig in).
The one in the wash is like the type you mentioned with the zip in the middle and you have to bend his arms to get them through the "sleeves" (always makes him more awake ).
The other two are ultra thin ones for really hot weather, so understandably have only used them a couple of times! Can't remember what they were like except they were a pig to put on too, so I'm guessing front zip for those.
Ailsa · 18/08/2004 13:49
Twiglett, I have a pink mothercare gro-bag if you want it, it has poppers down the front at the side. Not sure what tog it is though.
acnebride · 18/08/2004 13:53
Another vote for the Asda bags - I got one passed on to me and then bought the next size from Ebay. They don't feel as classy as the Grobags, and the ones I have are whitish with a not particularly attractive teddy badge, but they are quite a nice waffle fabric, the liner is pleasantly soft and they have a central zip with popper tab at the top. They don't seem to have a tog rating (though of course i never got any packaging) but are quite thin so I just adjust for heat - for a few days recently ds was wearing nothing but a nappy in the early evening. Would feel happy about just adding more layers as required. Am a total convert to bags as started with blankets but ds is a kicker.
sammac · 18/08/2004 21:09
Mrscurly-I still have 2 to swap. One I think about 1.5 tog, which is a jade green teddy pattern, and the other is lilac and a warmer one - 2.5, this has a warm lining. Lilac one is from Kiddycare which has been doing it for longer than Gb and are more expensive. If you want either just let me know
bunnymum · 18/08/2004 23:37
We've just recently bought a 0.5 tog gro-bag for a foreign holiday and those really hot nights we've been having. My DH managed to find a proper grobag one for 6 - 36 mths. It's huge with an extra bit of length that you can unpopper(I think it will last until she's at least 10!)
It came with a nursery temperature thingy to tell you what to put on underneath:
13-15 degs - quilted bag(2.5 tog), body suit & pjs or baby gro
18 degs - towelling bag (1.0 tog) or quilted bag, bodysuit & pj top
21-24 degs - high summer bag (0.5 tog - thickness of 2 sheets)& bodysuit or towelling bag & bodysuit or pj top
As our nursery was usually around 26 degs we were putting DD in the 0.5 tog with only her nappy or maybe a pj top
Hope this helps

You can get a 2.5 tog grobag from Kiddicare as an extra buy for 12.50 pounds, jus ordered one two days ago.
DS has a 0.5 and a 1 tog and the 1 tog is more than enough for most of the year. Having said that, coming from a tropical country my house average temperature through out the year is 21 degrees. So the 2.5 will be perfect if you are of those healthy northerners who sleep at a lower temperature.
Sorry if I am repeating what somebody else has said, little time to read the thread (off to sleep!)
