Aga - gas bills and curries..please help!

Hi, we'll be moving into a house with a aga. I'm going round tonight to have a look at it, before we decide how much we are willing to pay for it. What sort of questions should I ask?

Can someone tell me whether its suitable to cook curries on? I cook curries 3-4 times a week on a gas cooker. Only use a oven to make roasts, lamb steaks and jackets.

Also, my husband says that because its on all the time, the gas bill will go through the roof? Is this the case? Is it much more expensive to run than a normal gas cooker?

Would really appreciate any responses.

I don't think I could really be doing with it. I love the idea of having 4 ovens, but I just thinks its far too complicated. the house has recently been fitted with brand new central heating and a boiler so the aga won't be used for that purpose for keeping the house warm.

I might just stick to the conventional cooker and buy a mircowave oven too. The aga sure does look nice in the fitted kitchen, its just that I don't think we could afford to pay the extra gas bill, esp. since we are not at home all day and this aga is on! Isn't that dangerous?

Would like to hear more suggestions if possible. Thanks domesticgrumpess.

well, you can use it for drying washing on and also the extra heat means you spend less on actually heating your house.

You also get used to using ovens for things you would usually use a hob for, so the heat is not all wasted.

(I am just because I would love an Aga but we haven't got room. Actually it does sound like it may not really be what you need.)

Nooooo - don't get rid of it! I love my aga. It's so easy to use, you can cook anything on it at all and they keep the house lovely and warm. Go on a course (your local aga shop will do them), learn how to use it properly so you get the most out of it (it won't take long at all to learn) and enjoy! You'll never want a boring old cooker again.

The saga of the aga continues...so we went round this evening and its not even a aga! Its a rangemaster! Can u believe that. So we'll prob. put a offer in for it.

Do you think £400 sounds reasonable to you? They want £600 for it.
