Hi. I have a 9 month old and have a maxi cosi rear facing seat for her which she is beginning to hate and gets very bored in there. I know she doesn't weigh 20lbs yet.

I have a forward facing britax car seat but don't really want to move to forward facing yet or I have a britax rear and forward facing seat which is about 7 yrs old. I would use this rear facing but worried it wont be safe enough. Does anyone have some advice please? Thanks.

I agree she should stay forward facing for as long as possible. It is the safest way to travel.

We chose not to use our 6 year old infant carriers as we found some suggestion on the web that carseats over 6 years old shouldn't be re-used. HOwever, when I was looking for another MNetter recently I couldn't find it. It was based upon the fact that a) safety standards have improved so new seats meet stricter safety criteria and b)exposure to heat, cold and sunlight during use and storage could have weakened components.

However we are planning to re-use our 3 year old forward facing seat in a few months.

i had exactly the same problem, my daughter was small for her age and at about 9 months she got bored being in the rear ward, i bought a britax first class which can be rear ward or forward. i did alot of research into this because i my opinion even if baby is bored it could still make the difference in a crash. Everyone came back telling me strongly against putting an infant into a forward facing before they hit 20lb this is nt because of age or height but because baby is not heavy enough to bucket into the seat and there necks arn't strong enough to take the impact. My daugheter stayed in a rearward until 20lb and this wasn't until 14 months old. Also mothercare and halfords both advise against the britax first class or other combination seats because they are not as safe as infant carriers. hope this helps!!
