should I have taken insurance on my new leather settees?

Just bought two leather settees in dfs today - £499 each (less than half price today) , but it would cost another £160 on top for the 'insurance/protection' to cover against stains for 5 years. You get 2 years anyway for the frame and stitching (not stains) I said no, but wonder if I should have took it? It's a lot more! I know I have accidental damage on my home insurance anyway.
Will I have a problem with stains do you think? Anyone ever claimed on home insurance for their settee? Never had leather before - thanks

Will be covered by your home insurance surely?

dont know but just ordered a leather corner suite so should be asking the same question?

Pixiefish · 28/05/2007 18:16

I bought mine nearly 10 years ago and didn't take the insurance. i had accidental damage on the house insurance so it didn't matter. The leather on my suite (from dfs) is very easy to look after and despite having had red wine, milk and other food on it it hasn't stained

Desiderata · 28/05/2007 18:16

No. Don't buy the insurance. A leather settee will last for years and years ... the insurance is just a way to rip us all off.

Very wise choice if you have kids. Mine is dark brown, so no stains would show up. But I believe there are stain solutions on the market if you have a light/cream coloured suite.

Do a bit of googling and get a stain treatment if you think you'll need one.

actually.... dfs! I won't buy from there because I bought last sofa from there mear £900 for one sofa! and the covers fell apart and they didn't want to know when I called to to ask for help

It is a dark brown one.... Looked on ebay, and there are some (cherish?) kits on there. dfs chap, said a new sort of kit started from last week. Do I need to buy a special moisture lotion then? can you recomend me anything? Thanks

As a rule, we ALWAYS refuse those types of warranties/ insurance policies. There's loads of stuff on the web about how companies like DFS etc can afford to sell super-cheap stuff becuase they make SO much money on "insurance". Frankly, if you look at the likelihood of something terrible happening to your sofa, versus the cost the premium is just huge. Bit like the premium they charge on car hire insurance absolutely not worth it.

Get a care kit if you're the type to be bothered with them. I'm not. I figure that with a cheap sofa (I have cheap brown leather ones too), the crappy wood they build them with and the springs etc will be gone long before the leather cracks. Could be wrong, but I'm just not the type to mess about with leather polish!

I bought a leather care kit from Argos for £25 and have only used it half a dozen times in 10 years.

I use babywipes for spills.

Be careful not to use fairy liquid and water as my mum's friend did and the leather cracked

Desiderata · 28/05/2007 18:51

Ooh yes, Fairy Liquid is great for many things, except for carpets and suites (leather or not).

Tigi, I wouldn't bother shelling out on anything like a care kit. I like the look of leather when it's a bit worn and loved - but if you want to keep it 'buffed', Mr Sheen do special leather wipes (currently with 50% off).

One packet should last you ages.
