Car seats

DD1 (3 1/2yrs) is just under 15kg but I need to move her up into the next car seat as DD1 needs to go into DD1 car seat (following so far?!)

Do you think that this is OK? Is an isofix better as it won;t just rely on her body weight to hold her in or is isofix all a huge con?

TIA

Don't move her until 15kg she is too small yet ! Either wait to do the switch, buy a second Stage 1 seat (which should last until 18kg anyway) or a convertible one ( like Britax Evolva 123) which can become a highback booster too . As to Isofix I think beyond Stage 1 its benefits are still unproven and not recommended beyond 22kg according to our car manual (iirc).

thanks lizs - I had a feeling that would be the advice

it is NOT safe to put a child under 15kg in a car seat designed for children over 15kg

Thank you everyone I will revise my options. I thought that that was probably the care however I wondered if there was any wiggle room - obviously not!

Quick update

Went to John Lewis and have decided to go for the Jane Indy Plus. You were all right she should wait until she's 15kg, however as her head is above the back of the seat she needs to go into the next seat, so we went for the isofix as it doesn;t just rely on her weight to keep the seat in.

Thanks again everyone

have you bought it yet...

just because otehr non isofix seats such as maxi cosi rodi and britax highliner are safer than the isofix seats when independantly tested.

That jane one isnt that bad though (unlike some otehr seats that were) just that there are even safer seats avaliable

Frankly I ' m shocked if they recommended you move her up anyway. An Evolva has a higher seat back than most Stage 1's and would have a harness suitable for her weight. Also there's a Recaro similar style.

mishw · 27/05/2007 16:21

Yes we've bought it. The trouble is she under 15kg, but she's now too tall for her maxi cosi seat and as the stage 3 seats rely on weight to keep them safe...

Buts Lizs I can;t afford another stage 2 seat!

I was also surprised at how unpadded some of the seats were on the stage 3 car seats - so that was another factor in our decion as we do lots of travelling and it needed to be comfortable as well as safe.

But the Evolva is a Stage 1/2/3 (9-36kg) !! Not much price difference to the Indy tbh.

LIZS · 27/05/2007 16:30

of course it is entirely up to you but you did ask for our advice !

tutu100 · 27/05/2007 16:43

mishw just to let you know we had a similar problem to you in that our son outgrew his britax first class height wise, but didn't weigh enough to use a stage 3 seat. We bought a fisher price 3 in 1 seat which is suitable from 9kgs to 11 years and have found it excellent. The mothercare advisor said he needed a new seat but obviously couldn't reccomend the stage 3 as he weighed too little, but they also said that his head was coming higher than the back of the seat was dangerous as he had no head support in the event of a crash. We had to search quite a bit to find a seat that was right for him.

mishw · 27/05/2007 16:50

I know I asked for advice and I have thanked evreyone. I will also have a look at the Evolva and fisher price, thank you

tutu100

that fisherprice one is the old britax cruiser plus... which does very badly in crash tests, so bad they put it in the unsafe not reccommended section as it simply does NOT offer enough pretction in a crash
