We've never had a problem with capacity of buckets - we have one for railway track, one for marble run, trays for things like happy land, playmobil etc, and a whole system dedicated to craft materials. We keep things like happy land buildings on top. And we've put the three tiered ones next to each other as a mirror image, with the dolls house on the middle lowest 'shelf' (straddling the two units).

Have to say if you fill the largest size tray (bigger than the white ones shown) with lego or something it could get too heavy to lift safely for dc. I've found them ample big enough to put loads of stuff in. My friend uses the argos ones one on top of the either and fixed together - a good idea also, but you can't have different sized trays/buckets with them.
