Best way to block out light?

I know it sounds stupid but really-what is the best way to blok out light from your LOs room?

We've got a black out blind in the recess but it really isn't that good as light just comes in round the edges...........

Anyone have any handy solutions?

Curtains would be the obvious answer but we have shelves going right up to one side of the window and the cot is the other side so when dd gets bigger she'd be able to pull on them............but if this is the only solution we'll have to try it!!!

I suspect, they are costly. But it is necessary as it is for you...5:30am is too early!

MrsBadger · 25/05/2007 16:35

sticky velcro

hooky bit on window frame, soft bit on blind

MrsBadger -so, the same as the blinds in my link...only much much cheaper? !! I might try that first!

MrsBadger · 25/05/2007 17:06

hurrah for Mellowma and the new sofa!

(and I posted the velcro tip before reading your link LMP - was thinking how sammysam could improve her current blinds rather than buying new ones)

LittleMissPositive · 25/05/2007 17:59

Mrsbadger - I am agreeing with you about the velcro tip. I think its a much better idea than buying ones that do the same thing!

A friend taped newspaper over her window

skirmish · 25/05/2007 18:07

i just bought material from here:

here

and then cut it to fit flush on the window frames, and velcro'ed it in. Only problem is you have trouble opening the window - and now that the weather is warming up, so is the room, and no air can get in!

funnypeculiar · 25/05/2007 18:10

At one of more desparate moments, we cut cardboard to fit the window and taped that down, then blackout blind (with velcro as per MrsBadger.
No light got through that sucker...

JoyS · 25/05/2007 19:29

I got some blackout material and stuck it to the window inside the frame, and there's a blackout blind over that. You can still open the window although then the light gets in but it's so much better than just the blackout blind!

snowwonder · 25/05/2007 21:21

i like littlemis positive link, but to be honest you could make yourself much cheaper, just buy black out material and attache velcro, think i will do this myself, but dont know what i would glue it with no more nails?

alex8 · 25/05/2007 21:27

you can buy self adhesive stuff

woudl it ruin window frames and or windows? I like the idea of it on the windows so they can still open

sammysam · 29/05/2007 12:24

Thanks everyone!

Problem solved-or at least made much better as dp had one of his 'i'll make something to sort it' moments! He has put batten down the sides so the blind runs behind and then some mdf along the top and its soooo much darker now-1st night she woke at 5 and 30secs later went back to sleep and woke at 8.45!!!!!

But now i have ideas if this fails! Thanks!!!
