Double buggy thread advice number 389 (BORING!!!!) - side by side for one in front of the other

I am far too heavily pregnant and grumpy to search for advice so selfimportantly thought I would create YET ANOTHER THREAD regarding doubles. Will I need one? Baba number 2 due in a week (eeek) and dd will be 22 months and is capable of strops so I don't want her in reins etc.

We have a big boot in the car so not worried about space when folded but would like some advice from any wise ones please.

Side by side or one in front of the other, not sure what the proper terms are - tandem??

I'd get a maclearn side by side. In fact I did get a maclearn side by side. I tried a front one and found it far to hard work.

I have 22 months between my two aswell. What I had was a tandem which worked quite well for a bit as it was snug at the back for newborn, although my second baby preferred to be carried for a while so we also used a sling and maclaren buggy combo too. The tandem was great until second baby was about 6 months old and by that point I wished I had bought a side by side (more due to weight of first child though). If I was doing again, I would probably spend as little as poss on a Tandem to begin with and then swap to a side by side umbrella type (IIRC Mothercare do one for about £99). Think about what you will be using it for most, you might find one is more suitable than the other i.e Tandem best for shopping etc. HTH and good luck. (BTW mine are August and October babies too )

I had 22 months between mine and used a tandem to begin with. it was HARD work especially as i had a section. (MIne was 2 nd hand, i would suggest 2nd hand as you wont use it long) I then bought a 2 nd hand side by side which was much easier pushing wise but a nightmare to get in and out of shops, in lifts etc

Then I had a stroller with buggy board which i still have and thats great.

Honestly though 2nd hand for any double because as soon as you can dump it you will!

lonelymumof3 · 11/08/2004 11:05

i have got one of each (both for sale atm!!!) They side by side is much lighter but a pain to get down narrow streets. Tandems are much heavier but will probably last longer.

nutcracker · 11/08/2004 11:11

I had 24mths between Dd1 and Dd2 and tried out every double going.
I had had a section though and found the tandems just to heavy to lift up and down kerbs, although obviously easy to get through doors etc.

I had a side by side in the end, but ended up using about twice as Dd1 decided she wanted to walk everywhere.

We also brought a very cheap buggy for if we went out for the day anywhere, so that dp and i had a bugy each and Dd1 could have a rest from walking.

I too would go for the cheapest double that you can, as it really won't be used for long at all.

I have a side by side as found the tandems too heavy to push after having a single 3 wheeler. DS was a big 24 mth old so we ended up with a double 3 wheeler as the seats were larger than the cheper umbrella ones- (instep nipper) it only weights 9kg and gets me into most places.(it is narrower than the mothercare ones) It is easy to push even with one hand and is still going strong 18mths later (i'm childminding it and have a 18mt and 14mth old in it most days).

Brilliant, thanks everyone! Looks like a side by side is the one to go for then. I have my beady eye on a McClaren one but it is only in red and I don't like the colour, think it is about 150 pound or Mothercare have another Mc one with cosy toes etc for 180.

I had a section with dd too but not sure what will happen with the impending birth, I am being given a trial labour (??) so may not be able to use one of those papoose type things initially if I have another section, it hurt my stomach too much with dd but then she was 9lb 10!

Re buggy boards - do they not make you walk with a stoop? Can't see dd staying on one for long tbh.

I have 18 months difference in my 2 dd's. I had a side by side three wheeler, which was fine as long as I didnt want to get into any shops, but both girls liked it. However, I was getting so frustrated I have just bought a e3 with doubles kit and think its brilliant, I can get anywhere and when the older one doesnt need a buggy I can ditch the extra seat and turn into a normal buggy. In my experince the buggy board didnt work, quite uncomfortable to push and I just couldnt keep my oldest one on it.
