Ergo baby carrier with back pack - any good for hiking and can you do it on your own?

I'm feeling the urge to be a born again earth mother and am loving the idea of soft fabric baby carriers. DH wants to be able to go walking with DS. This one looks like a good compromise. I'd be interested in people's experiences. DS is 9 months. Thanks.

twinkle, twinkle, I recently bought one of these I haven't quite mastered the back carry yet, but can carry ds2 comfortably on my front (and you know how heavy he is!)

I like the look of that Wallace but I don't think DH would go for it and we can only afford one.

The Ergo is fab. The weight of the baby is distributed evenly across your hip area so your back area doens't get hammered.

I used to go on 5 mile hikes with mine really easily and also easy to put on alone. Watch the video and have a few practices at home and you'll soon get the hang of it

Thanks! I'm trying to persuade DH that he really doesn't want a huge framed thing. Next question people - does anywhere sell them at a discount, or do they come up often on Ebay?

The framed ones are harder to carry. With the ergo, because its a soft carrier and the baby is next to you rather than having them pulled away from you as in the framed carrier it is much easier to carry them. You can actually run with the Ergo which I wouldn't like to with a framed carrier due to the risk of falling over.

They tend to keep their value well so even second hand they can be not far off the new price. Try parenting forums like Hunnybeez.co.uk- they have a classified section

We have both an Ergo and a framed carrier (LittleLife) and I've used both to carry DD for hikes (even up to the age of 2.3 when I had to stop cos I was pregnant!)

The Ergo is INFINITELY more comfortable than the framed one - I could carry her forever in this, but got achey shoulders with the framed one after 30mins.

The other bonuses are that you don't look like you're about to tackle Ben Nevis if you use the Ergo around town etc, and it packs down much smaller. It's expensive, but cheaper than a good framed carrier. I got mine off Ebay but like it so much would pay full price if I had to buy another
