Sling Gurus - help needed

DS2 (15 weeks) used to love to sleep in his sling (coorie and tricotti) but is now far to big for it. He seems to want to sleep in cradle position rather than upright but obviously this is impractical at his size (over 16lbs) - any suggestions for a sling that he will be really snuggly in for sleep. I think it may take him a while to get used to sleeping upright rather than cradle but if it was really comfy maybe he could be persuaded!

Wallace · 14/05/2007 20:45

very versatile

Another vote for a wrap sling. The Kari-me is stretchy so not as supportive for heavier babies - a woven one is better for older ones. You could use it to carry in the cradle and upright positions. Have a look at this site or this one

I thought with the woven ones you have to put them on with the baby on you - rather than putting them on first then putting baby into sling IFYKWIM ?

These are the best I've found - great for cradling babies up to a year.

amazonianwoman · 16/05/2007 15:16

I sort of half put my woven one on, then slot baby in, then tie rest of it around. Good photo instructions here

does it not give you shoulder pain?

anyone else used a betterbaby sling?

No, it's really great because there is a padded bit on the shoulder which spreads the weight beautifully. I have also (briefly) used a ring sling without the pad - all the fabric bunched on my shoulder and that was very painful.

katierocket--My dd used to sleep in cradle position in a tricotti, but when she got to big I put her upright and she fussed for a few times, but got used to it. I say keep giving it a go.

Hated the BBS. It was very sore over my shouder and neck.

Very padded over the shoulder too. I found it difficult to move my arm much.

But maybe I was doing it wrong

mama22 · 18/05/2007 09:33

definately a woven wrap- a waves didymos- if you can spare the ££ would be a very suppportive and cool option adn would give you something you could use till ds is a LOT older... like I still use mine with my 3.5 yr old. You can do both upright and cradle with a wrap.

It's worth the learning curve. If you are comfy with the idea of a 'one shouldered' carry then I would also consider a linen ring sling- also supportive and airy for summer.

If you get a non-padded ring sling then the size difference between you are your DH shouldn't matter, you just have more material hanging down when you use it.

A Mei Tei is great as it fits all sizes and will do you for ages, my ring sling has been retired now DD is too heavy for a one hsoulder carry. They are also easy to wear when there is no baby in it, so handy for popping them in and out (same as a ring sling)

A wrap is good, very versatile and comfy, but not so easy to put on and off, it's better when you know they are going to be in it for awhile, rather than a quick trip to the shops or the park.

katierocket · 19/05/2007 13:29

I think I may just have to try and 'teach' him that he can sleep in upright position in a sling (rather than just cradle position).
