I would get someone to build one for you. It doesn't have to be over-engineered or anything. My DS room is tiny about 5ftx6ft. Dh built a raised platform across the room. Its quite high up. There is a shelving unit at one end underneath IYSWIM this gives loads of storage and DS uses the edge of the shelves as a ladder (prevented younger DD from climbing the original ladder. There is a metal bar running the length of the bed underneath from the shelves to the other wall. This has those hang up wardrobes from ikea on it and a bit of hanging space too. Loads of room for his clothes. This leaves space for a desk under the window and more shelving on the wall near the door for DS massive fossil collection. Oh and there is a climbing wall going up the other side of the bed too. See it sounds so exciting. Our neighbours copied the idea using fencing posts. Its a bit rough and ready but their daughter loves it. YUou just have to spin it in the right way.....

I agree allmytime. Basically it's easier to build one in a small room. All you are doing is filling some of the space in the room with a raised platform - slatted base so that the mattress doesn't get too damp. It is quite easy really. You can them make it as fancy and decorated as you wish. And a small ladder.
