its a high back booster seat,

i told him his weight (2.3 st) and hes 2.5 yrs old.

So i bought a high back booster seat without harness.

Ive just got home (went all the way to mothercare on bus to get this)

and it says on the box 15kg + (just weighed him and hes 13.5kg)

and it also says 3 years +

can i use it??

he seems to fit fine in it and hes not far off 15kg - the age say approx

im just a bit miffed that they sold it to me as right, and now im not confident it is IYKWIM

My DS2 is about the same age and weight as your son.
He insists in going in his brother's seat when DS1 isn't there.

He seems perfectly secure in it to me.

chilledmama · 14/05/2007 19:18

Its usually the weight that is important with carseats...1.5kg is quite a lot when treferring to a baby! Its your call but would you be able to live with yourself if something happened?????

Sorry for being so glum but car safety is a major bugbear for me.

kittylette · 14/05/2007 19:19

its about 4lbs?

should i just hold onto it until he gets to that then start using it?

Ring them/manufacturer and confirm/complain.

My neighbour had a satge 1 (or is it 2 - the first propre front facing one) fitted by mothercare. Used it for a couple of weeks and then had it fit tested by RAC (or whoever) at one of these mobile fit centres you get from time to time. They said it was a borderline fit and in hte end decided that if they were hesitating over teh desision it should be a no.

She went back to Mothercare - explained and they happily took the (used) seat back as they shouldn't have sold it to her.

chilledmama · 14/05/2007 19:21

I would...

What are you using just now?

SlightlyMadSlipstream · 14/05/2007 19:22

I agree the load weight is an important part of the seat when tested.

kittylette · 14/05/2007 19:22

hes in a harnessed forward facing,

chilledmama · 14/05/2007 19:23

Has he exceded the weight limit on his current seat?

SlightlyMadSlipstream · 14/05/2007 19:24

TBH if his weight is still low enough for hte harnessed forard facing that is the safest for him - even when he does weigh 4lb more.

A lot of people forget that just because they meet the guidline weight for a given seat it is often safer to stay in the next stage down until they actually outgrow the weight on that one IYSWIM.

kittylette · 14/05/2007 19:24

no, but my 2nd son is in a maxicosi cabrio - 0-9 months

hes now 11 months, so i need him to move into DS1s forward facing harness seat,

but like i said we dont drive so its not soething that needs to be done immediatly

OP posts:
kittylette · 14/05/2007 19:26

actully just looked it up and he can stay in it till 15 month

SlightlyMadSlipstream · 14/05/2007 19:29

Again though it is the weight that is most important. My DDs were all tiddlers and they were nearly 2years before we moved them from their rear facing and nearly 4 before they moved to highbacks. Make sure DS2 isn't a big baby and leave them as they are.

I would expect that by the time DS2 outgrows his rear facing your DS1 should be big enough for the highback you have brought.

HOwever - if you have any doubts you are within your rights to return it.

chilledmama · 14/05/2007 19:29

Cabrio is up to 13kg which can be much longer than 9 months.

DontCallMeBaby · 14/05/2007 20:38

The longer you leave it, the more likely he is to comply with your strict instructions of 'no playing with the buckle!' Depending on the seat though, it may be less of a problem than you think, I was pleasantly surprised with DD's highback booster, at just how far out of the way the buckle is, with the design of the seat (lots of nice protective padding).

LIZS · 14/05/2007 20:44

No ! take it back and complain, 1.5kg difference is too great and affects the safety of your child. 5 point harnesses are recommended until 18kg.

dd is 14.8kg and 5 and I still won't put her into a highback booster. You can get ones which have a harness for use up to 18kg then become a highback booster - we have a Britax Evolva 123 which does that.

kittylette · 14/05/2007 20:56

i know but i havent got the money for a britax plus the fact that its only used maybe once a week ...

OP posts:
SlightlyMadSlipstream · 14/05/2007 21:22

if it was me I would take it back on principle and then co to babies'r' us or elsewhere and spend my money.

There are som great online stores that do great prices when you know what you like.

kiddicare.com, twoleftfeet (or something like that) - then you won't have to trapse around on the bus

LIZS · 14/05/2007 21:27

Argos do this one which works similarly and is probably a similar price to the one you have just bought. Mothercare do this which is more

ellenkpa · 14/05/2007 21:27

my ds has been in one of these seats since he was 3 but he is off the charts on height so i had to!

i agree kiddicare.com are great, i looked in mothercare and used their knowledge, then saved £50 by ordering the seat they recommended, but from kiddicare

twoleftfeet have had very negative reviews on MN before I think?

hairymclary · 14/05/2007 21:27

no, I wouldn't use it. my ds is a similar age and I wouldn't be happy for him to only be strapped in by a seatbelt.
I would either get something like the britax evolva (it is worth the extra money)
or another forward facing 2nd stage seat

kittylette · 14/05/2007 21:29

thnks LIZS i think ill return the mothercare one and get your linked argos one instead xx
