Which baby suncream do you use?

I've got the factor 50 Soltan from Boots, for 9m old DS2 but its like spreading sudocreme on him - it feels awful on his skin and its the consistency of treacle! And leaves a layer of white sludge behind
I know they do a green spray on one, at factor 30 but is that high enough? Any suggestions for an easier option please? We are going on holiday soon and I am not looking forward to the ten minutes of screaming baby whilst we try and rub it in!
thanks

I think I read somewhere that anything over factor 30 made no difference anyway Lisa.

I think I'll have another mooch in Boots then - I just grabbed the highest factor baby one before. Might squeeze a bit out of each one this time!!! Then reach for the one behind it!!!

Sunnies, sun spray or simplebaby which we are using at the moment..although it might look a bit thick you don't need loads and has loads of other good stuff in it!

We love Malibu, easy to rub in and smells coconuty. It's quite reasonabley priced as well. Available in lots of places but we found it in Woolworths this year on BOGOF. (i sound like an ad)

daisy1999 · 07/08/2004 19:22

I've just realised there's a drink of the same name! This is the suncream I'm talking about. OMG I hope I didn't mix them up today, this drink looks awfully thick!

daisy1999 · 07/08/2004 19:24

Sorry the sun's gone to my head, my dd is 5 yrs and I've just realised you're asking about babies. Please ignore me and I'll have a snooze.

Lotion goes on easier (as I have discovered this week - forgot the cream and had to borrow from friend). We have Johnsons Factor 40 - on offer in Tesco at the monet (half what it is in Mothercare!)

Slightly off topic...but i was really suprised that our new nursery uses factor 15. You can either pay towards this or bring your own, so I've taken in a factor 30, but it seems low for pre-school kids? They have quite strict rules on how long they can spend outside with the kids and at what time of day though.

I think sunnies are great

Piffleoffagus · 07/08/2004 21:10

I don't like to use suncream on my kids, they all wear hats and light longsleeved tops if they are out in the sun for any length of time
ds tans like a native american colour dd is liek her dad, pale, she would go red and then white again and burn in seconds, she stays under the brolly/sunshade at all times or wears a lovely muslin type of long sleeved top.
But soemtimes if I have to use it I use ambre solaire, it absorbs well, smells fine and actually works and doesn't need re applying as much as others, I only use a factor 15 though.
dd is 21 mths and never been in the sun tbh...
ds is now 10 so he is always on the move and always wears a t shirt...
I am getting seen by a dermatologist next week as an urgent referral for irregular skin moles. I grew up in NZ, we were ungoverned in the sun...
I am slightly paranoid I guess

Hulababy · 07/08/2004 21:53

We use factor 30 Soltan on 2yo DD - a spray one, but not coloured.

The Tescos and the Asda own brand green pray ones gave DD a red rash wherever it was applied

Furball · 07/08/2004 21:57

Ultrasun is brilliant,(click 'products' at the top then 'protection 28) gives UVB factor 28 and UVA protection as well. It's applied once a day and thats it til tommorrow, fantastic!

Oooggs · 07/08/2004 22:01

I use Nivea Sun Childrens (Green) Sun Spray Factor 40. It is suppose to be extra water resistant (I haven't checked this out) and has a UVA of 3 which is good. Easy to apply and DS - 8 months - thinks is a tickle game. Not too good it you get it on clothes though. Stains a pale yellow.

jane313 · 07/08/2004 22:31

Ultrasun is great, its means only one fight per day over putting it on my sons face and no more white stuff that staisn everythin gin its wake.

The cancer research website only recommends factor 15. I took this from their site

"The reason experts recommend factor 15, is that this represents the best balance between protection and price. You will get over 90 per cent protection from UVB rays with SPF 15. Above SPF 30 you don't get much additional protection from higher factors.

No sunscreen - no matter how high the factor - can offer 100 per cent protection.

factor 15 sunscreen offers about 93% protection
factor 30 sunscreen offers about 96% protection
factor 60 sunscreen offers about 98% protection"

I had thought the difference was much bigger.

gingernut · 07/08/2004 22:45

That's interesting, jane. I use Ambre Solaire Kids Factor 60 sun protection milk on ds, who is extremely pale (as are both dh and myself). I've stuck to this one because it's not too thick to put on and ds isn't allergic to it. Tried the Nivea Factor 40 green one but he developed a rash. Also use Pampers Sunnies, particularly when out and about, as they're less messy and easy to carry around in your bag.
