Would a ten year old Honda FR-v with 75,000 miles on the clock last another 3 years?
I'm struggling to get what I need within budget, I've found one of these & it seems to fit the bill, but I don't want a money pit so wondering if anyone has had one/ has got one & if they could offer any advice please.
If not I'll also welcome recommendations for a family car under £3,500, reliability is top priority

It would easily last at least another 10 years as long as it's been maintained. Is there any history? Honda's are generally reliable on the whole. The only way if you're unsure would be to have an independent inspection done

Thanks blast, the info on autotrader says it has one careful owner and full service history. I think I'll go up tomorrow and check it out, it's a small dealership though & I get easily persuaded with sales patter so I'll do some more research on the economy/ tax etc first

Any 10 year old car can have reliability issues BUT with a Honda you’ll improve the odds somewhat. If it’s been well looked after and you continue to look after it it should give many years service. If you’re lucky you’ll get 3 years with just servicing/mot which will probably cost £200/year, maybe you’ll have to chuck some tyres at it at some point. I would be very surprised if you spent as much as £1500 on it in 3 years for mot/servicing/repairs etc. Cheap motoring.

I would price up a clutch because its highly likely you'll need to do it soon. Might be cheap might be prohibitively expensive.

Yes, assuming it's been properly maintained and you continue to maintain it. One of the main reasons older cars decay is that people get into "oh, it's not worth getting it serviced, I'll just MoT it and fix what breaks".

I have run several cars up close to 200k miles, and my current car is a teenager approaching 150k. They're always maintained to precise manufacturer schedules (although by an independent) including cam belts, gearbox oil, brake fluid and the other infrequent stuff. They do get more expensive as they get older - suspension components, for example, and modern cars tend to have an appetite for brake discs since pads went asbestos free - but that increase, perhaps five hundred quid a year in the worst cases, is a lot cheaper than buying a new car.

Your dad will tell you that old cars are trouble. But since the early 2000s rust is a solved problem, and modern manufacturing means engines will last 200k with a modicum of care. The economics of modern car ownership are different to the past, and provided you keep maintaining them cars have a high chance of lasting essentially forever. As soon as you stop maintaining them, they decay quite quickly.

Hmm yes can belts & clutches, I'll phone up my garage to see what he'll do it for.
Cuboida - what kind of car is your 150k teenager? Sounds like the kind of thing I'm looking for!

Clutch could go tomorrow, could last another 80k miles. Very difficult to tell.
