Dp has managed to scratch all the enamel off the bottom of the toilet

I cannot be arsed to go into how or why but he has done it. Is there any product that puts enamel back on to a scratched toilet? Because it looks like something out of The Young Ones now.

oh. what colour is it?

FrannyandZooey · 12/05/2007 15:51

shitey yellow / beige

with black scratches

I am presuming we would need a plumber to fit a new one as well?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 12/05/2007 19:50

Given the mess your DH made when merely unblocking the toilet, yes I'd recommend a plumber to fit a new one!

FrannyandZooey · 12/05/2007 19:54

yes a new toilet is not going to happen, so

if you are visiting me, pls pretend you haven't noticed the knackered old toilet

FZ if it's any consolation our upstairs loo (our main bathroom is downstairs) has obviosuly been 'attacked' with something and most of the enamel scratched off the inside at the bottom - looks HORRID - but at least it's only us, and very close friends/family that use it and the downstairs one looks nice

Mind you - Ceolas thanks for that link for the new toilet pan - didn't realise you could buy them so cheap might have to get DH to consider it......ooo and the little tiny sinks are quite cheap too - the sink in our bathroom (upstairs) has some 'green' stain on it that won't come out!

FrannyandZooey · 12/05/2007 20:08

Thanks FA (am I right in thinking you are QOQ? I can't keep track of anyone these days)

unfortunately this is our downstairs one, which was already fairly dodgy-looking (just a bit old, and afore-mentioned crappy colour)

that's what you get for feeding him quinoa

FrannyandZooey · 13/05/2007 09:35

the cheek foxinsocks

he says he has scrubbed it and it is looking better now

I haven't been arsed to look yet

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 13/05/2007 09:37

lol

I have a vision of your husband up all night scrubbing the loo to avoid your wrath (or the wrath that comes with a re-enamelling kit from Plumbworld).

FrannyandZooey · 13/05/2007 09:46

LOL

I am not such an old harridan as I appear on here you know

I am even quite nice in RL

Toilets aren't enamel, they're porcelain!

FrannyandZooey · 13/05/2007 09:53

Yes dp said that too

what about vitreous enamel then?

OP posts:
WendyWeber · 13/05/2007 09:54

RustyBear's link below is for porcelain

FrannyandZooey · 13/05/2007 09:57

I think vitreous enamel and porcelain may be the same thing

but I am too lazy to look it up

OP posts:
WendyWeber · 13/05/2007 09:57

But - I guess that might be a problem

I'm constantly amazed at how much damage one child can do to things you never thought of - we have a wooden mantelpiece and DS2 once amused himself by striking matches and scorching attractive black marks along its top edge

FrannyandZooey · 13/05/2007 10:01

LOL this was dp that managed to do this, WW!

OP posts:
RustyBear · 13/05/2007 10:39

OK, so I looked it up (can't you just tell I should be doing the ironing..)

Vitreous enamel is "a thin layer of glass fused by heat on to the surface of a metal." (It is also sometimes called porcelain enamel)

Porcelain is "a ceramic material made by heating selected and refined materials often including clay in the form of kaolinite to high temperatures."

hth

FrannyandZooey · 13/05/2007 10:47

LOL so was I right or wot?

OP posts:
WendyWeber · 13/05/2007 11:02

I'm pretty sure the enamel on a bath is a different material from the glaze on a loo, even if it is called porcelain enamel

Franny, sorry, didn't notice it was DP!

MMooMar · 13/05/2007 12:24

FrannyandZooey, asked DP (plumber) if there was anything that you could use for this and he has said that your DP has probably just marked the toilet pan with the metal rod rather than actually scratched into it as this would cause the black scratched apperance. He uses BATH RUBBERS and said they get marks off toilets baths etc that you would never think would come off.
SCREWFIX sell them for £6.99 + P+P or most places that sell plumbers supplies.Might be worth a go.

Try screwfix.com and put bath rubber in search .
xx

FrannyandZooey · 13/05/2007 13:05

MMooMar I think your dp is right and it has just marked it severely

Dp has scrubbed a bit off and some more seems to have just floated off during the morning

if the rest doesn't come off I shall look for the bath rubber - thanks so much, that's extremely helpful to know

WW I know, when I post about ds liking to dress up as a pirate everyone thinks it is dp, now I post about dp screwing up you assumed it was ds

If you've got one of those magic white sponges, it might be worth trying one of those then.

FrannyandZooey · 13/05/2007 13:07

Ye-es

it is covered in water atm though, I am not sure what it would do to the sponge? Worth a try though

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 13/05/2007 13:11

Get your DH to bail some of the water out with something you don't want to use again. You are meant to get the spinge wet to use it aren't you? Not quite to that extent though I guess. ANyway, it removed the black scuff marks from my enamelled bath where the shower hose had rubbed on it.

FrannyandZooey · 13/05/2007 14:24

Yes sounds a darn good idea, especially the bit where he has to bail water out of the toilet bowl

I am not sure if the sponge is meant to be wet, I have a mild sponge phobia (don't ask) so prefer not to touch them
