I bought this for dd and have washed it as per instructions, well actually 30degrees not 40 as it states. The pink lettering has come out all streaked.Do you think I stand a chance for a replacement or refund?

If its not fit for purpose then you can ask for a full refund! Topshop and similar outlets are usually pretty good anyway.

You may find theyve had this problem anyway, I took a shirt back to Morgan once as it shrunk in the wash and they said that theyd had hundreds back with the same problem

HTH

dingolimpet · 11/05/2007 13:58

yes just take it back i'm pretty sure they'll just exchange it, how long have you had it?

HenriettaHippo · 11/05/2007 13:59

Definitely. It should not run after one wash!! Had a look at the picture and it reminds me of my 'yoof' in the 80s...

LIZS · 11/05/2007 13:59

As not of merchantable quality/fit for purpose etc, yes . If you accept a replacement I'd say it would be very likely to do the same.

brimfull · 11/05/2007 13:59

had it for a week

If you have the receipt or other proof of purchase (ie, credit card statement) then yes you can get a refund. Without it, they may exchange.

PrettyCandles · 11/05/2007 14:02

Receipt? If you have it you shouldn't have any problem returning a defective item for a complete refund. If you don't then they may not accept or only give you a credit note.

DeviousDaffodil · 11/05/2007 14:02

If goods are faulty you do not need a receipt although it is helpful if you do.

LIZS · 11/05/2007 14:03

No you don't need proof of purchase for these scenarios although it is often helpful.

PrettyCandles · 11/05/2007 14:08

Are you sure? I've been told that the reason shops won't always accept returns without proof of purchase is to do with shoplifters.

DeviousDaffodil · 11/05/2007 14:09

I used to work on a refund desk in a store. If goods are faulty you do not need a receipt.

LazyLine · 11/05/2007 14:18

Legally, you need a receipt for any sort of return. Well, proof of purchse anyway. You can often get something without it, sometimes stores can check store sales logs or someone remembers you or maybe you get lucky. Stores will often exchange without a receipt but you ARE NOT legally entitled to ANYTHING without proof of purchse!

LIZS · 11/05/2007 14:37

Sorry I disagree - while ideally you should produce something - receipt , statement etc - even a store sewn-in tag in the back of a tshirt, most of which will also have the bar code/sku number on these days, is sufficient. The "grey area" is goods which could be purchased in more than one place such as common brands.

You DON@T!

LazyLine · 11/05/2007 14:39

LIZS, as I said, sometime shops will do it, down to the discretion of the staff and manager.

However, you would be wrong to claim that you have a legal right to a refund with no proof of purchase.

LazyLine · 11/05/2007 14:40

Sewn in labels naming the store do not prove that you didn't buy the item second hand, or stole it.

LIZS · 11/05/2007 14:46

anymore than a non itemised bank statement ?. Given the stock turnover at Top Shop I suspect they will accept it has been bought recently.

thanks for all the replies, apologies for not getting back to this thread a friend came round.
I will check for a receipt but have probably binned ,did pay by credit card though.

LazyLine · 11/05/2007 17:06

LIZS, they probably would. But the point was that it is not a legal entitlement. I never claimed anything about non-itemised bank statements.

brimfull · 17/05/2007 13:10

took it back this morning and got a replacement as dd is desperate to wear it to a concert this evening. No questions asked but only asked for a replacement not a refund.
