Want a nice blanket for DS for cub camp/ badges

DS has just come back from cub camp. He commented that someone suggested he sew all his old beavers badges on a blanket and when he goes to scouts to do the same with his cub badges. whilst daunted by all the sewing I do think this is a lovely idea. But can't decide what blanket to get him.
He went with a cheap ikea fleece this time but will that stand the test of time? Easy to wash and dry though. Or do I find him a snuggly wool one which will hopefully last a long time. What do you reckon? Any suggestions please (don't want to spend a fortune though).

get a cheap Ikea one, or even a slightly-less-cheap fleece one from

I had a wool one and because it was dry-clean only it was revoltingly filthy... and probably still is.

Cloudhopper · 11/05/2007 09:58

If you're going to spend all that time sewing them on, then I would buy something to last. I will have a look around as I am looking for a baby blanket atm as well

Indith · 11/05/2007 10:06

Fleece is great but def make sure you have one that will last they make fantastic memory blankets, I sew neckers etc on mine from internationals and stuff too. I had a wool one but it started to get horrible and now have a fleece one and a bag of about 200 badges to go on that came off my old one!

Remember they don't exactly get washed so a dark colour is best

Def get a reasonable quality blanket - there used to be a framed one with hundreds of badges in the church I used to go to - you never know DS might still be wheeling it out when he's 70! Mines an old army blanket - might be able to get one in an army surplus shop. The guiding catelogue do one aimed at putting badges on - perhpas your local scout shop has something similar????

allmytimeonmumsnet · 11/05/2007 19:00

Ooo excellent idea I'd never thought they might actually make one for the purpose. Will have a look right now. Thanks.

They do! Its a brown 70% wool one with darker brown trim. I expect it has the cub logo on it somewhere.

Its only £10 which is probably less than I'd spend at ikea.

Thank-you so much for the suggestion. Suppose I should think about getting DD one for brownies then too!

Grrr. Explain this to me. The cub one is the same as the scout one so they can keep it going. Sensible and lovely. 70% wool so tough and warm.

For brownies you get a brown fleece one. For guides you get a blue fleece one. Why is the girls side of things less organised. What happened to sustainability!

Because Guides have a habit of not thinking things through! Really really doesn't matter what blanket you get for your dd, not many people have the 'official' one IME we have a random selection of blankets.

pelvicflawed · 11/05/2007 19:44

The scout ones sounds better than the Guide one if its wool etc. Never really thought about it but it is a bit daft to have a Brownie one and then a Guide one - you'll never move the badges across - its bad enough putting them on the first place!!

allmytimeonmumsnet · 11/05/2007 19:47

Well I'm definitly going to order the scout one for DS. Now I'm on the search for a nicely stripped blue and brown wool one for DD

allmytime - could you link to the blanket please? I am after one for ds but am unable (or too dense?) to find one on the scouting website shop.

thanks!

pelvicflawed · 11/05/2007 19:57

Thinking about it - you could always get DD the Guide one - her badges are probably on her sash and she won't take them off until she leaves to go to Guides (if she does). Her Brownie friends might think she is rather cool to have a guide one.

MrsBadger · 12/05/2007 09:37

Top tip - if she leaves Brownies with lots of badges just sew the sash straight to the blanket - saves a lot of effort - ditto (eventually) her Guide one

Scout badge blanket here

allmytimeonmumsnet · 12/05/2007 16:04

It looks like the same place I ordered my blanet from although it was listed as scoutshops.com

Our brownines sew the badges onto their gilet which is a bit annoying as I was given a hooded top from freecycle but never mind. I found one on the same site reduced to £5. Just hope its the right one - the smaller size said it was brown) so feel quite smug about that.

Not going to worry about DD blanket yet. She has only just started - making her promise next week. If she starts to pester or they suddenly go to camp the I will rethink. In the meantime if I spot a brown and blue striped one.......

I'm afraid I wouldn't get my internet search badge, because I've clicked on the link, and I still can't find a badge blanket. Is that what it's called? Can someone do me a more specific link please.

MrsBadger · 12/05/2007 17:18

use my link, takes you straight there!

(though it does look just like an army surplus blanket tbh)

MaureenMLove · 12/05/2007 17:20

Another top tip for sewing on badges. Sew them on in one corner working out iyswim. That way, they can fold it in half diagonally to put round their shoulders and still see all the badges and they'll all be the right way up too.

MrsBadger · 12/05/2007 17:27

only works if blaket is square though

Mine was oblong (single bed size I guess) so had to fold it in half else it dragged on the floor. Eventually got wise to it and sewed two bits of cord on it so when you put it round your shoulders you could tie the cords together and it'd stay on

LittleMouseWithCLogsOn · 12/05/2007 17:29

my mum scut an ol balnket in half for my dsses
