2nd gen Prius- any owners/reviews?

We're thinking about getting a Prius as our only car (we don't currently have one at all and I'm feeling quite urgh about the transition to car ownership but we're shelling out so much on rentals for holidays and trips at the moment and want a bit more flexibility for rural trips at the weekend). We're zone 4 London- it will mostly be used for local/trips of 1-3 hours and the occasional longer trip. 2 DCs- 4 and 18 months- so moving past the buggy/loads of stuff stage.

Some questions:

-They are generally quite high mileage in the price bracket we're looking at- up to 5k and preferably less. I understand that's not an issue so much with hybrids- up to 100k seems to be ok? We don't really want to spend more as it will be a weekend car only.

  • If anyone has one do you find the boot a sufficient for say a camping trip? And has anyone put bikes on the back?

-They look a bit long! Are they ok to park (or is this just deceptive with them being low?) I am used to driving smaller hire cars like Golfs or a Yaris and our on street parking is tight.

I am basically totally clueless so any tips of how I should approach this with a dealer would be great. DP doesn't drive so this is on me!

Or other suggestions of something eco and (ideally) automatic in that price range? Focus often seems recommended but the low emissions ones are diesel and that's a no no as far as we're concerned.

We have a 2009 Prius bought from new, when it was the new model , it’s not really big enough for camping and taking bikes away especially with 2 children. We only have one child and it was a squeeze for camping with no bikes, but we have just bought a Toyota Alphard, for camping and weekend trips and chucking bikes in. £5500 for a 2002, 70000 miles imported from Japan automatic but has a big thirsty V6 engine... very impressive seven seater, it’s very nice to drive and a much better buy for a weekend low mileage leisure vehicle than a Prius. We keeping the Prius for commuting it’s very efficient and fairly cheap to run so that offset the costs of the Alphard a bit.
