mountain buggies. worth the money or just get an urban detour instead??

i love the look of the mountain buggies but i have never seen one in the flesh so to speak. I would like a black and pink one as I wanted something a bit more girly, but they are about £400. I could get a plain black one for about £350 and make a pink insert for it with fabric i have already got. Or I could just get a plain black urban detour from mothercare for £160 and again make the pink insert myself. I will only really be using it for walking the dog across the fields, unless it turned out to be a superbuggy then I would use it all the time and have to sell my pink loola I don't really want to spend a lot of money on it if its practically going to be the same as the urban detour. DH said he doesn't care which one I get or how much it costs. He likes the P&T but i don't. It's me thats going to be using it. Also, dd is 15 months, and she will probably be my last!! )she says!! ) I put her in the urban detour the other day in mothercare and she looked a bit big in it. Will the mountain buggy be bigger? And if so will that means its generally bigger all round??

Opinions please. Thank you.

hello hub. fancy seeing you on a mountain buggy thread . took dd to the cinema this week actually, & she was a bit of a nightmare, but we can but try. thurs/fri normally good for me. will do some web investigations.

Bagpuss30 · 09/05/2007 21:32

Hi Hub and HC! Hub your photos are gorgeous, dh asking over my shoulder what camera you use?

In answer to the OP, I had an Urban detour 6 years ago and it was fab, but swapped for a P&T. Would have an MB over them both if it would fit in my car though!

hoxtonchick · 09/05/2007 21:38

hello bagpuss! it's a july 05 reunion . should go & post on our thread really.......

hub2dee · 09/05/2007 21:42

1dilemma - lol - you missed loads of album updates then ! (link ).

hc - yes, it might all be rather stressful and impossible to get them to stay still lol. Thursdays you'll get dw thrown in for free. - Friday - Tales from the Shed , Southgate any good for you ? The los will LOVE it.

hub2dee · 09/05/2007 21:43

Sorry Mr. bagpuss: Canon 30D (a digital SLR), prime lenses.

Let's reconvene on our thread, eh !

Bagpuss30 · 09/05/2007 21:46

Ta, Hub, mrbagpuss is nodding sagely.

Wil have to go and see if I can find the July 05 thread.

gybegirl · 09/05/2007 21:57

Sis has a MB Terrain but wouldn't hand it over to me - still brill 5 years in so she's still using it (for child no2). I went for the MB Urban. Love the swivel wheel for shopping and drag it over beaches on a regular basis. Well worth the cash in my book!

hairymclary · 09/05/2007 22:03

mountain buggy. absolutely no contest.
urban detour is cheap and tacky compared to it, too fiddly, too heavy.

mountain buggy is light, easy to manouevre, simple to use, won't EVER break. they are so worth the money

hub2dee · 09/05/2007 22:03

Mr. Bagpuss - just bought a wireless trigger for my flash gun: highly recommended. It's the ebay product shipped out of HK by gadget infinity. Works with the 580EX and my body. Great fun.

Just bumped the July 05 thread.

hairymclary · 09/05/2007 22:03

btw keep an eye out on ebay, they go for much, much less on there and second hand isn't a problem because they are so sturdy that you can usually hardly even tell

nearlythere · 09/05/2007 22:18

The Urban Detours are great but if your dd is 15 months it will get very heavy! stick to the lighter ones, thought i'd mention the britax trekker is going on kiddicare for 60 quid! and its a lovely little buggy!

amazonianwoman · 10/05/2007 11:33

Mountain buggy any day - no contest. It's a TRUE 3-wheeler rather than a pseudo towny fashion one! No offence to any urban detour owners btw.

Love love love mine - took lots of mumsnetters to persuade me to get one - no regrets whatsoever

booge · 10/05/2007 11:40

Another Mountain Buggy aficionado here too, I have the single and double urban.

tartanchatterbox · 10/05/2007 13:05

I have to admit that I only have the double UB. great And I have photographic proof of my 7 year old in it - much to her disgust!
Really lightweight (for a double) and tried most incl. powertwin (Jane) which was far too long to manouvre and had to balance on the handlebars to get up curbs. The double UD is really well balanced to do this with weight over the back wheels.

It's great off-road (my kids (5stone together!) bot h fell asleep on a really rough path tree roots etc) on their first trip out in it.

It also folds pretty flat to get into car.

My UD is 2nd hand and - like another MNetter,- could be that the older models are the best.
whatever you get - get a lockable/swivel wheel!

tartanchatterbox · 10/05/2007 13:08

I saw that too at £60 on the kiddicare (search on MB and it comes up) I don't know what it is like for performance, but Britax has an excellent build quality!

Anyone who suffers from punctures? Get the latex/foam aerosol from halfords (petrol stations too)to do all your tyres (and the kids bikes too) A bit messy but makes them practically puncture-proof after that.

MunchiesMama · 10/05/2007 21:18

Hi

I have neither but a friend bought a mountain buggy and finds it bulky and heavy, and wishs she had gone for the out n about equivalent.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 10/05/2007 21:50

Urban Detours are fab. I have a single which has taken one of my 3 DCs over the Ashdown Forest (tree roots, brambles, potholes, thick mud, long grass, etc) everyday for 5 years. I also had the double version which I used for about 1 year. They are also very swivelly around shops and do curbs easily.

Changing flat tyres is the only downside but I haven't had to do it too often - which given how much off-roading we do - is pretty good.
