Mould avoidance on wooden worktop (oh the glamour)

Keen to avoid the mouldy tap area thing two or three years down the line with new kitchen we're planning. If not for mould potential would love all oak tops.

Have considered making the sink run - short side of an 'L' shape - stainless steel, with sinks set into steel worktop with upstand which would solve the mould issue but cost tons approx £1,000 quoted by local catering company.

Am planning 700 deep worktop so maybe a non-splash type tap and a forward set sink might make area less damp behind. I do love the idea of undermounted one and a half plus drainer grooves cut in the wood but surely this is mould welcoming madness?

SOOOOOOO......Anyone got a magic potion to avoid mould or some sort of cheaper stainless steel at back of sink genius notion?

I've just had my kitchen done and have some wood worktops but got a fab sink and stainless steel worktop from Wickes - I think the total cost incl taps was about £750.

You should hopefully be able to see it

here

It is shown in the picture inset inset into a breakfast bar - which might give you the 700 depth you want. We have just used it as a standard depth worktop. The picture doesn't really show it properly - we didn't realise it was a normal thickness of worktop (thought it just sat on top of a worktop iyswim) - so ordered way too much wooden worktop (to go underneath)

You need 2m space to fit both the sink and worktop in (but you could just buy the sink). HTH

If you oil the wood regularly, I think that helps to protect it as it then repels water. I use linseed oil on our worktops, but am not diligent enough to have stopped the water affecting the worktop.
