Video Baby Monitor - basic question?

Hi, does anyone have a video baby monitor that they would particularly recommend. We like the idea of getting one, but are not really sure how flexible they are. For example, do you attach them to the side of the cot? If not, I'm not sure we have anywhere high enough to put the camera.

Can you fit a shelf above the cot (far, far above the cot)? Personally we have an angelcare which has been used for one hour and then removed. You HEAR the little darlings very easily and I see her all day every day, why would I want to watch her blow snot bubbles out of her nose and snore?

Hi jillybaby i agree with whomovedmychocolate, we bought a baby monitor, not video, but one which you can programme to dial your mobile rather than go to the walkabout bit whenever your baby makes a noise. 'prithee, how posh am i?' i thought as i trotted out of boots with it (65 quid lighter and even then it was half price coz the updated one was a slightly different shade of white or something), then when got home dh said 'what on earth have you bought that for? we'll hear her and why do we need to have the mobile phone programmed in? are we leaving her in the house by herself then?' and i looked at it and thought 'Bah! simpleton has obviously gone shopping by herself again!'. Basically, get a sound monitor-y thingy, and even then your maternal supersonic hearing will alert you long before any monitor does to any muffles!

Oh and they are crap quality anyway, even the digital ones. Honestly, unless you live in a vast mansion, it's best not to bother unless you are a really nervous mum (which lasts oooh about eight weeks).

Besides, you quickly learn that babies are astonishingly noisy in their sleep and you have to ignore the first gurgles, it doesn't mean they are waking up, just making noises. You WILL hear the FEED ME scream - in fact you'll probably sense it before you hear it (it's a mum thing).

Save your money and buy some comfy trousers for all the crawling on the floor you will be doing!

I've got the Boots one - the quality is excellent. It's mounted on a shelf high above the cot.

The main reason for getting it is because my baby's room is not only the other side of the house to our room, but on a different floor as well - so being a nervous 1st-time mother I wanted to be certain I'd know when my baby was awake!

I have to say that I really like it - mainly because the best feature is the infra-red night option which helps me locate the dummy in his cot prior to me going downstairs to put said dummy in DS's mouth!

Realistically though, the other posters are correct - it's not necessary... great gadget, though!

Ive got a Summer baby tv monitor. The picture and sound quality is excellent and you can put the camera on a shelf, you dont have to mount it.

Thanks for the advice. I still think I'd like a monitor of some kind, like some of you say, I'm sure (or should I say hope) I'll get over the 1st-time mother jitters early on, but you can't help them being there. I'll have to look at where a shelf could go if we go ahead and get a video monitor.

Ive got the video monitor in my two yr olds rm so that i can see if he falls out of bed.

I still use a breathing monitor for my one yr old, the tommie tippie one, they are very reassuring.

Put the cot in your room.
Really.
Much easier.
