As part of my plan to get my life back on track, I dug my bike out of the back of the shed yesterday (after nearly 5 years!!!!) and decided I want to start biking again. ds1 is old enough to ride his bike alongside me. dd is 2 and a half and ds2 is 24 weeks. I was looking into getting one of those trailers to put on the back of my bike? I wondered though cos ds is so young and cant sit up yet, if i could put him in it in his car seat? i dont know the first thing about them. Failing that, has anyone got any other suggesstions?? Please help!!!

lmo3 - Hi! We once bought 2 bikes from a bike hire place at Sherwood (it was close to the Centerparcs place.) They were ex-hire and so were reasonably priced. So my suggestion is that bike hire centres might have bike trailers for sale 2nd hand. HTH

Hmmm. Yellow pages might have some listed, perhaps?

We have one of those trailers - I think ds was a little older - maybe about 9 months when we first used it, and he was all but walking by then. I don't think it would be that easy to strap a car seat into ours tbh. Our trailer, new, was only about £80 - occasional weekly special offer at Lidl!

some of the bike seats that fit on the bike frame recline back quite alot, so would be good for a 24wk old. You can also get them to go on the front rather than the back, so you can keep an eye on them, which appeals to me. This doesn't help with the 2 1/2 yr old though, unless you put another seat on the back? This might be a bit heavy and wobbly though. I've been thinking about this myself, but we live on the 2nd floor, so would have to keep the bike on the balcony and drag it downstairs everytime! If its the exercise you want, not specifically biking, what about getting a cheap 2nd hand baby jogger, either a double or one with a buggy board, and your eldest can cycle alongside?

I've got one of the bike trailers - they are absolutely brilliant, the kids like to call it their mini-caravan!!! My kids are 3.5 and 5.5, and although it's a bit of a squash now, they both still fit in. Theres a big storage section on the back of the trailer, and sometimes we've strapped their bikes in it with a bungee cord, cycled them to a big safe area, and then they've cycled themselves in safety (the 3.5 yr old is not ready for pavements). We have so many options now for family cycling, I also have a seat on the back of my bike for my youngest. This weekend we went on 4 different cycles, using various options, so I would highly recommend it. I would say you should be able to get a baby seat in it, but not sure about the straps. We bought ours from argos for about £79, but first we looked in jjb sports, as they had the same model for sale on display, argos don't display them. So we were able to check it out in the flesh first, then buy it from argos where it was cheaper.

We just bought one this weekend and the kids love it. It did say on the instructions that only children sho can sit up unaided should go in a trailer. Still it won't be long before your baby is at that stage. I tried the bike seats on my bike and the girls hated them. They didn't feel very secure, probably because I found my bike heavy and hard to control with all the extra weight directly on it. The trailer is a much more stable option . Good exercise too!

I'd shop around and it would be a good idea to go to a specialist bike shop to chat it through with people in the know. There are so many on the market but you do get what you pay for. Some of the cheaper models are not very substantial and wouldn't offer a lot of protection in an accident.

Bump!

The trailer we have converts into a jogger (has an extra wheel and handle!)
Have had our 4 years and the kids love it, BUT

I wouldnt use one on very busy road, remember your kids are basically at bumper height.

Hills doulble in size.

That said, for transporting 2 kids and a picnic they are fantastic!
