Advice needed for Child Bike trailer please

We are desperate to get out on our bikes as a family. We have a 3 year old and a 4 1/2 year old. The 4 1/2 year old is not very confident on her bike, certainly couldnt go out all on bikes with her on the road, we looked ad the little bike that we add to the big bike and dont think she would get on with that too well.

So we are now thinking of the child trailers, but, could we fit two children in one. My 3 year old is average size but the 4 1/2 year old is quite small. How much room is there, would it be comfortable. I'm hoping it would just be for this summer and that next year she would be more confident. We havent looked at any yet, just want to know if its a possibility before we go into the shop. Also how easy is it to ride a bike with a trailer attached, but that would be DH's responsibility! Thanks

Don't really like the look of trailers but have you considered a tag along? We have one and it is some of the best money we have ever spent!

My DCs are a large 5.6 (DS) and a small/medium DD (3.6). DD goes in a normal seat on the back of my bike. We bought DS a tag-along about 6-8 months ago which goes on the back of DS's bike and he absolutely adores it. It means we can go for miles and miles without worrying about tiredness or whingeing (altho my whinge-tastic 3 year old was having a sulk in her bike seat the other day because her legs were aching from "too much pedalling").

DS does the pedalling with the tag-along and he says it is not too bad.

I think they cost about £150 new but much cheaper on e-bay etc and apparently they hold their value really well and you can sell them back for about £10 less than you bought them for.

And they apprently last until they are 8 or 9. Can you tell I am a huge fan?

They also look really nice and people very often point and smile/wave at us when we are out on it (we live in SW London).

There is another thing called a tow bar which I have seen on websites but not used which you can attach to a child's bike intermittently which will then pull the bike along. Not seen these but look interesting for the future.

Jenkel sorry to butt in on here - we replied re the savannah dresser but you don't seem to have seen it? We want to buy it!!!! Thanks

I am about to buy a towbar, so will report back.

I like the tagalong, use it all the time. Why do you think your 4.5 year old wouldn't get on with that?

Anchovy · 02/05/2007 16:49

NQC, you are my virtual twin today with our pre-diabetes and our tag-alongs . We use ours all the time - pretty much every weekend and DH took DS to school on it this morning

Frogs - I am very interested in the tow bar. I think when DD graduates up to the tag-along and Ds is riding his own bike, it will be useful to have for longer journeys when Ds gets a bit tired. Will be very interested to hear how you get on.

i dont like the look of the trailers for road use. kids so unprotected and right at wheel height

i do have one tho (for use in forest parks etc) and its convertible into a pushchair and have used it at a festival as such - mnay jealous looks.

anyways, upshot is; in answer to your question, yes, theres plenty of room for two dc. i guess depends on model, but mine fits 15m, 2.10 and 3.11yos all side by side. its a squeeze but they fit.

NotQuiteCockney · 02/05/2007 17:07

I collect DS1 from school in central London, most days, on his.

My discomfort with trailers is partly down to visibility, and also the extra width. I think they'd be lovely for paths etc, but not so much for London traffic.

jenkel · 02/05/2007 18:00

thanks for all that, sounds like we could get two dds in one then.

We did look at the tag alongs but honestly dont think dd1 would feel very confident on it, she isnt too confident on her bike.

We would be using it for country lanes, no major roads.
