need to know if boys get very macho all of a sudden when they hit a certain age and will be mortified that they have a play kitchen in their bedroom. or in other words should i buy cheap and cheerful or invest in a lovely wooden one....... hhmmm makes me wonder whoi am buying this for!

got one and regretted it

Ds1 is 4 and still likes to 'cook' a bit. He does have an older sister though. Don't know if that makes a difference.

elasticbandstand · 01/05/2007 22:01

how about cheap and cheerful, for the garden..

PeachesMcLean · 01/05/2007 22:02

DS grew out of play food at about four I'd say. Got macho at about five (partly to do with peer pressure I think).

MerlinsBeard · 01/05/2007 22:02

ds2 (2) wouldn't play with a playcooker. He hasn't the imagination for it. He des play "shop" with DS1 though (ds1 is 4) and adores the till.

Olihan · 01/05/2007 22:03

Ds1 is 3 and still plays with his but deosn't 'cook' or anything on it. He just uses it as a prop for various other make believe games; putting stuff through the hole when you take the sink out, 'rescuing' things from the 'cave' (oven), that sort of thing.

My DS is just 2 and he's got the little compact kitchen from ELC. It's one that fits on a shelf rather than a big thing on the floor ifykwim. Has a pop up toaster, washing machine, oven with timer and a hob that sizzles when you put the pan on it with fried egg in. I love it!!!! ........... errrrrrrrr he quite likes it too

Nemo2007 · 01/05/2007 22:03

Ds loves his play kitchen, he is 3.6yrs and I got it at xmas after he asked for nearly 8mths. I didnt think he would like it but he does. Also have 2 girls and DD1 is 16mths and loves playing with it aswell.

DimpledUpperArms · 01/05/2007 22:04

got one of thosse little things (£10) that is small and I put it on top of an upturned cardboard box and gave her my pans and stuff.

She loved it for about 3 weeks.

ChasingSquirrels · 01/05/2007 22:06

do ikea still do the wooden cupboard type one? got it for ds1 when he was just two and it was only about £20, he used for 2 years then i put it away to make space, will get it down for ds2 in a few months.

MrsSpoon · 01/05/2007 22:06

Both my DSs enjoyed the play kitchen between the ages of 2 and 4.

MrsSpoon · 01/05/2007 22:08

Actually just remembered DS1 was a bit of a late starter and was 3 1/2 when he got it, probably outgrew it at about 4 1/2 but DS2 was much more into imaginative play and definately enjoyed it between 2 and 4.

Tamum · 01/05/2007 22:08

I would say until 4 if you're lucky, definitely no later. I think you're right about the potential for being mortified once he's at school.

DeviousDaffodil · 01/05/2007 22:10

DS2 had one for his second birthday, played with it no more than 5 times. Sits in his bedroom untouched. Am waitng to palm it off on my nephew!

Rachmumoftwo · 01/05/2007 22:11

My nephew is 7 and would not play with a cooker at home. But when he is here he plays with the girls toys quite happily, all in the name of humouring his cousins of course, and his friends must never know I saw him playing with Barbies!
