Company car Vs car allowance

I'm an absolute novice about cars as a work benefit. I've just started a new job and can choose a company car or a car allowance. Does anyone know where I start to compare? I've Googled online calculators and am being lazy can't get my head around them.

I'm a higher rate tax payer and can either have a company car with a BIK value of up to £27k or a monthly allowance of £416 (which I presume I'm taxed on at 40%). No work miles really, some commuting and mostly personal.

Thanks very much!

Obviously depends on what car you choose as to how much you'll pay a month BIK and don't forget the fuel element also if they're providing you with a fully funded fuel card.

I suppose it boils down to whether your current car is suitable for the policy and you're happy with it and if that's the case take the money. If however you are prepared to have your monthly take home reduced but a nice car sat on the drive and relatively hassle free motoring as the lease company will deal with everything then go for the car.

Sorry forgot to put the link in for the website I use to work out P11D values

Thanks chill . That's good food for thought. My current car won't cut it! It's 15 year old Skoda (not commensurate with my position). I really want an electric car - I like the new (not out yet Leaf) but that's got a BIK of £30k so I'd need the allowance (and then some!) for that.

If no or very few work miles. I’d take the car
