No idea what I should get godson for Christening on tight budget

I’m godmother to my closest friends son along with 2 other godmothers (SiL and family friend who’s husband is godfather to their older son who I’m also godmother to).

When her older son was christened (6 years ago) I shamefully didn’t think/know that I should buy a gift which I now feel terrible about.

The christening is combined with his first birthday party. I have gotten him a gift his mum asked for and am helping out with a few other things (non financially). But I’m stuck for what I should get him for his Christening gift.

They aren't really or at all religious (I’ve know her since we were 12 and the only church service she goes to is weddings) she is also like myself and very fussy. To top things off I’m really on a tight budget as it’s my daughters birthday DAYS before which we already arranged a party and invited loads of kids before she arranged the joint birthday Christening celebration. We’re having work done to our house which has put a massive strain on us financially but that’s a different story and we have baby number 2 due in 5 weeks.

Any ideas on what to get that’s appropriate for a 1 year old that’s not too expensive but still nice???

Tricky, as I'm confused why they are having him Christened if they aren't religious.
It is traditional for the Godparents to give a bible, or Bible story book, or a similar gift that reflects they are beginning as they mean to go on in their promises to support the family in bringing them up in the Christian Faith.
If it is being done a "just a party", then get any gift you would give for any 1 yr old's birthday.

A nice book which you can write a message inside, something like To....,With lots of love from xxx on the occasion of your Christening. Maybe poems? Hardback is nice but doesn’t have to cost a lot, you could go to The Works.

I'm also wondering why they are having him Christened if they aren't religious.

As the christening is combined with the birthday party I would buy just one joint gift.

I think the in laws are religious not church every Sunday but enough to make an excuse of an event. I’ve already got his birthday gift but a book is a lovely idea. I do books a lot as gifts as I don’t think you can ever go wrong with one and it’s often nicer than the lastest plastic toy! I might look out for a nice hard back. Thank you x

If you can find left over Christmas stock somewhere then a nativity scene, or Noah's ark toy is something religious but child friendly. Classic book, plate with his name on etc.

I find a copy of Dr Seuss' 'Oh, the places you'll go' usually hits the spot...

I always get a personalised book of some description for christenings Smile in the past I've had Peter Rabbit and Nursery Rhymes.

'Justloveit' is a great website and very reasonably priced!
