How much per square metre do you need to pay to get a good carpet....?

That's it really...just wondered how much people tend to pay for a really good quality carpet that will last.

In the past we have always chosen something between £25-30 per square metre, but now wondering if you really need to spend quite that much, or whether if you don't it ends up not wearing well?

Thanks

We have just got our hall stairs & landing done for £1,300. I think it was £18 per square metre. We had a mobile carpet guy who was fantastic. The same carpet was £22 per metre in the shops. It has all those stain guard thingys on it.

I think our most expensive was about £15 per square metre.

Go for a 80/20 wool mix, they are harder wearing and stay looking good for longer. Also you can get away with a cheaper carpet if you get the best underlay. Underlay makes all the diference. I would recommend getting a good quality thick one.

Any other questions I'll try to help as my dad is a retired carpet fitter

I've bought all our carpets at various times in sales. The most expensive is our bedroom which was £20 (reduced from £65) plus £7 for a middle of the range underlay. Our cheapest was £12 in the bathroom (reduced from £25). Made my choices primarily on the basis of colour, then softness to touch. Fitters had a tough time fitting our bedroom because it was so thick, making it difficult to manhandle.
Paid about £25/m2 (no deal) in our flat where we lived for 9.5 years and we didn't need to replace them even if they looked a bit tired by the time we moved out, so it was money well spent.
I suppose it depends how long you're staying and the likelihood of you changing them again (expect to replace bathroom one every few years).
