'Black and white' development books

Hi - does anyone know where I could get a book aimed at young babies that just contains black-and-white pictures (exciting stuff!!) that helps with the development of early vision? Thanks.

We got a fabric black-and-white one as a gift and DS loved it to pieces (we used to call it the "teddy" because DS could sleep anywhere where the book was). I think I have seen them in Borders as well as Tesco, but you can always draw the figires (spirals, geometric figures, etc) in a cardboard and place it by the cot, they spend hours looking at them

I think Mothercare do a range of these too, and out Waterstones had some in their toddler/pre school section.

I was just going to suggest that, Chandra!

Also, FWIW, when DS2 was very tiny he shared his basket with a small pink flamingo toy (donated by DS1) with a large, prominent black beak. It was about 6" from his face and lying on his side at 3 weeks old he was able, with a huge amount of effort, to reach his arm across and biff it. (I have it on video )

So 3D b&w (or b&p!) images possibly have even more effect than flat ones!

Hi chonky - how is your dd doing? (we 'met' on the April babies thread). I can recommend this .

hewlettsdaughter · 26/07/2004 20:20

My dd has it in her pram and she stares at it for ages.

When ds1 was born, I remember being shocked at the price of these black and white mobiles, pictures etc so I did exactly what Chandra suggested and used some white paper on black card or vice versa to do some chequered patterns, circles etc and stuck them on the side of the cot, on the underside of the shelf above the changing table etc. Used some expensive catalogue picture for inspiration and was able to do a huge range of interchangable ones for pence!

My ds loves his Baby, Boo! book bought from Mothercare; he's been looking at it since he was about three months, I think, and at age one is still entranced (reads it to himself). It's got close-up b&w images of a baby's face on one page and a geometric pattern on the facing page, obviously different expressions/patterns on each page, ending with a mirror. Published by Amazing Baby, www.templarco.co.uk
Got another b&w book of baby faces in the NCT sale but Baby Boo! is his favourite (and the other one is probably out of print).

Thanks everyone. I guess it's time to get the black felt tip out . My dd is making slow progress (thanks for asking hewlettsdaughter, hope everything is going well with your April babe), we think she can now make out black and white, however we're still waiting on some more hospital results from last week, and she has to have her hearing tested next month. Poor wee chick. Just trying to take each day as it comes, but she's as gorgeous as ever.

Hi, I used these NCT Catalogue and highly recommend them. Not expensive and ds was fascinated by them.

sammac · 27/07/2004 11:55

Hi Chonky

I've got a black and white fabric one you're welcome to. I've also got a couple of others, but I'd need to dig them out.
I'd be delighted if they were of use again. I'm sure they're the ladybird type ones. The fabric one is concertina like, other is chunky book with assortment of faces, and can't remember other one!

Contact me and I'll send them off.

Janh · 27/07/2004 12:58

Hello, chonky - I'm sorry, I didn't realise your DD is having problems with her vision. I wonder if you might be better making your own anyway - with very large blocks of black and white - the smaller patterns that most of them seem to be might possibly blend together into grey if her vision is not clear? (Although the NCT ones that mummyji just posted the link to look pretty good.)

Good luck with everything anyway. She sounds lovely!

hewlettsdaughter · 27/07/2004 18:08

The pics in the Ladybird cot book are pretty bold - the one sammac is offering sounds like that one. Let us know how your dd gets on chonky

chonky · 28/07/2004 13:40

Thanks everyone. No need to say sorry Janh, I didn't give any of the background details. I'll keep you all posted as to how she gets on. It's a big help having MN to keep me distracted. Everyone on the boards has been really helpful & positive.
Thanks Sammac too for the offer, I'll be in touch.
