If you drive a Range Rover do you like it?

DH thinks it would be a good fit for us. We're very rural and it fits his lifestyle.
TBH I've always been a bit sneery about RR drivers, we have narrow lanes and they seem to be unable to reverse.

But, having had a good look I can see the attraction.

Thinking Velar or Sport.

Shocking reliability. Not many things I’d rather own less.

kingjofferyworksintescos · 09/01/2018 21:13

Lovely to drive but tend to be unreliable / expensive when things go wrong

coldnosewarmears · 09/01/2018 21:55

Ok, thanks. Any opinions on the Discovery?

All Jaguar Landrover products seem to score poorly on reliability surveys and yet people keep on buying them. Marketing over substance. You could stick a Landrover badge on a pile of dog shit and some idiot would buy it.

MrsMozart · 10/01/2018 14:41

All the ones I've had have been good.

EggsonHeads · 10/01/2018 14:44

I love ours! It is the most practical car ever. It is very easy to drive and very comfortable. We do a lot of rural driving and we have never had an issue with going cross country. They are very spacious inside, we have been able to fit loads inside. They are also brilliant for motorway driving-brilliant suspension, really comfortable seats! Most importantly they are very safe. I used to be sneery about RRs too. But then we had our first baby and we were driving along a country lane with a Range Rover coming towards us and I thought-that is the car I want! But thumbs up from me.

EggsonHeads · 10/01/2018 14:46

We've had 3 by the way with no problems and excellent servicing and roadside assistance packages complimentary. Ok, it's a little bit embarrassing sometimes but who really cares. People who judge don't know what it's like. Don't get a discovery though. Range rovers have different tech to the other land rover vehicles. Discovery just doesn't perform as well in poor conditions.

Kursk · 10/01/2018 14:50

Reliability is poor. We have had a Disco and a freelander. Both repeatedly broke down,

If you are buying new, lease it and trade it every 3 years as the warranty expires. Otherwise don’t touch it.

I have a Ford Expedition now. Bigger, and nicer than a Range Rover.

FeralBeryl · 10/01/2018 14:52

Money pit! Love it, safe bet for all weathers, off roading, huge boot space for work, fits 3 group 1 car seats in back easily.
But. Anything goes wrong after a few years then be prepared to spend hundreds to solve a problem that may cost far less on a 'normal' car.
Also the danger that once you've had one, you don't really want a different vehicle ever again Wink

muffmuff · 10/01/2018 14:53

I've had a Range Rover lovely car but very big to park. I've went back to my Land Rover freelander great car . Very needed as live rurally with kids. I'm trying to save up for a Range Rover evoke as they look a bit smaller to drive

cheshiremama89 · 10/01/2018 15:58

Love ours, and service from Land Rover is impeccable

coldnosewarmears · 10/01/2018 17:41

Thanks for the comments.
I don't think the Evoque is right for us but for those who do like them which model do you prefer?

I had a RR sport from new for 3 years a few years ago. It was fab. Comfiest car ever. No issues with it at all in those 3 years, no repairs or breakdowns. Totally reliable car. I would really like another one as nothing else has come close.
Have heard about issues with discos and freelancers but the RR is better imo.

TopazPolly · 10/01/2018 20:52

Freelanders even. I'm sure freelancers are totally reliable!

cheshiremama89 · 11/01/2018 07:24

Evoque x

reddington · 11/01/2018 08:19

More food for thought OP, various reliability surveys compared to other manufacturers:

Reliability Index - 36th out of 39
What Car - 31st out of 32
Which - joint bottom

One of the shittest cars you can buy!

MrsMozart · 11/01/2018 10:16

Don't know the criteria for those repots but certainly not one of 'the shittiest car you can buy'! Did tens of tens of thousands of miles in my Disco in all weathers and it just kept going. Safe, warm, comfortable. Have a Mercedes ML now and when change it'll be to a RR.

Pagwatch · 11/01/2018 10:20

We had one but recently got rid of it.
Shockingly expensive even for minor repairs and not that great for comfort etc. We drive to Spain once a year so comfort is an issue. It really wasn't great.
I think they are really well branded so you believe you are getting better quality than you actually are. We were pleased to get rid of it and our new car is infinitely better.

FeralBeryl · 11/01/2018 13:34

What have you gone for now @Pagwatch ?
I like the look of the fpace but don't know if it's going to meet all our needs..

reddington · 11/01/2018 13:36

“Don't know the criteria for those repots”

Two of them are for cars 0-3 years old and the Reliability index is based on extended warranty claims so I’d expect that to be 3 years and older. All JLR products come close to the bottom of just about every reliability report I’ve ever read. Sure, there must be some that never break down but I stand by my point that they are one of the shittest cars currently on sale in the U.K. I wouldn’t touch one with a shitty stick. A triumph of style (and marketing) over substance.

Thingvellir · 11/01/2018 13:52

We had an RR sport for a couple of years a few years back. It was great to drive, very comfortable etc. I loved that car....But yes, the one we had was unreliable. Had to fix all sorts of things, and repairs/parts cost £££. For this reason and the huge petrol consumption, I wouldn't have one again.

EggInABap · 11/01/2018 13:57

I've had a Discovery Sport for 3 years and I absolutely love it. No problems so far, great to drive and actually more economical on petrol than my old hatchback. Definitely worth a look in my opinion. I'd love a RR but they just cost too much to run.
