Our one is the ixus i. very very small like a spy camera - good as its easy to take around with you. Although we also have a fuji finepix digital which takes better pictures (but costs around 500 squids).

enid · 24/07/2004 19:44

its very very simple - dh is the photographer but even I can use this one, love the fact you dont have to squint through a viewfinder.

There's different models of the Ixus. We have the Ixus II (a 3.2 mega pixel camera) which has come down in price considerably recently. Just go for the one the most mega pixels you can afford in that line! From what I remember, Amazon was very competitively priced.

mummysurfer · 25/07/2004 19:00

i think with amazon you get the camera and that is all. you need to buy the case, the recharger etc. so maybe the argos price isn't so bad.

We have just bought a digital. My DP is the type to do weeks of research to get the best camera for the best price. We bought ours on the Internet as it was around £150 cheaper than cheapest shop. We bought an Olympus - 4m pixels and 10 times zoom. It also does mini films (up to 15 mins) which we wanted as we didn't want a separate camcorder. It's bigger than the IXUS but is really easy to use and is very good quality. My DP used Pricerunner a lot to see what the best deals were and they also do great reviews on there from people who have bought the cameras. Happy snapping!

We have the Ixus 300 and have had it a couple of years I think. It is our 2nd Ixus - the first was stolen in Belgium, but we replaced it with a newer model straight away. We really like the Ixus and I love the fact that is is so sturdy and small too. It is dead easy to use. I like taking the short 15-20 second video clips too (of DD!), and the black and white option produces some great photos. And the fact that it uses a rechargable battery is a bonus for us. The ones that use normal batteries appear to eat them IME!

PILs have recently bought the newest model, on our recommendation. They took it to Australia and were really impressed with the quality of their photos.

Rowlers,
I have been looking at the Olympus 10x digital zoom for a while now. Which model did you buy, I like the look of the C750, but I think the latest one is the C765??

How is the battery life?

How big a memory card did you buy?

What is the quality like at highest zoom?

(Have been dithering on this for 6 months now - am I as bad as your DH??)

Gingerbear · 26/07/2004 15:32

I can also recommend pricerunner.com to check on cheapest prices for digi cameras BTW.

mummysurfer · 28/07/2004 12:31

does this sound like a good deal?
thanks

Hi Gingerbear, firstly, I'm glad to hear there are others out there who dither as long as we did!!! A decision seemed to take for ever and each time we made a decision, DP would have one last look and change his mind... Anyway, to answer your questions as best I can. We bought the C770 which I think is the latest model out. It cost us £370 on the Internet - Pixmania.com. Battery life is pretty good if you just take pics but obviously less if you take films. DP wanted it because it takes MPEG movies, I'm not completely sure what all that technobabble stuff means but I think the files are supposed to download quicker / take up less room on PC? Pic quality we thought was great, even at 10X zoom, until a friend brought round his digital SLR camera with around 10m pixels. Still he paid around £3000!!! What else did you ask? Oh yes, memory card - we bought (I think) a 128 card which is fine - takes loads of pics but are considering buying another as films take up a lot of memory. DP is really pleased with it - for the money it does a lot. I think it's the smallest 10x zoom digital on the marekt? The only problems we have had are - 1. We often have to fiddle to connect it to the PC but to be honest our PC is an ancient crappy old think so I think the problem is with the PC. 2. we didn't realise this until we had bought it but if you are taking movies, you can only either use sound or the zoom, not the two together. DP was really disappointed in this but we have been using it to film our DD for the last few weeks and it's been brilliant - we haven't really needed to use the zoom anyway. Hope this helps! one word of warning about buying cameras on the net - sometimes they only have the instructions in French or some other lang. It will state this on the site before you buy though. HTH.

Gingerbear · 28/07/2004 16:22

Brilliant Rowlers, thanks for that. We spent £600 on a digital camcorder 2 years ago, and it is so fiddly to put films onto video and we dont have the cables for our (also ancient) PC, that now we hardly use it , so a camera like this seems a good deal.

Might put the camcorder up on ebay.....

Kayleigh · 31/07/2004 20:36

Rowlers, can I just say thanks. Came and did a search on here as wanted to order a digital camera. I have used pricerunner and pixmania tonight to order an Olympus Mu400. The comparison feature was great and I have got just what I wanted.

Thanks again

The only thing that I hate about the IXUS is that they are so cute that you don't feel like asking "excuse me, could you take a picture of us?" because you really feel they will run away with it!!!

I have a first generation IXUS digital which is not very good (bad resolution even at its maximum) and a normal aps (which is the second one we get as the first got broken). We got the three of them as gifts, and they have had some use, however....I still miss the normal 35 mm film which are so unexpensive to develop and that you do really print!

mummysurfer · 31/07/2004 22:18

we've just ordered our canon ixus 500. ordered from amazon in the end as dh not happy with ordering from a company he hasn't heard of!
