deodorant and bad reaction question - can anyone help?

I seem to be forever at the doctors for my children and can't face going for myself and so wondering if anyone else has ever had a problem using deodorants. Don't know where this has suddenly flared up from but whenever I use deodorants lately I get a gradual skin flare-up problem which leaves me unable to use them. I have tried various ones and am trying various alternatives now but in the muggy heat of the day it's making me turn to deodorants again for a few days before it gets really bad again.

So my question is anyone out had similar experiences with deodorants who could suggest what I can do? Shaving is out of the question, they are so bad.

are they red rasied spots that itch? i had this a few yrs ago as reacted badly to one deodrant. i had to wait a few weeks for the swellings to go down, then switched to a gentler brand.

lush do block deodrants, which are kinder to the skin, and i think theres a make called pit rock (? not too sure on this one) which is gentler as well, but think u have to ask the chemist about that one.

I haven't had the reaction you describe, but use an Almay unscented "hydrosolid" block, which you can get in Boots. It is a very effective deodorant , and can last 48 hours.Other antiperspirants have made me itch, but this one doesn't.

memder · 22/07/2004 12:04

Not red raised spots it's like the skin has been burnt just plain bright red, open, raw, inflamed looking. Will make a note of the blocks mentioned so far thanks missdee and tissy.

I react to any of the "Sure" deodorants - red, itchy and stings.

Only use "Dove" roll-ons now - no problems at all and can apply Dove straight after shaving without any stinging/redness.

I get this if the deodrants are highly scented...am okay with Lady Michlen (Sp?) non-fragrance

sleeplessmum2be · 22/07/2004 15:45

have always used and sure and suddenly developed an allergy to it switched to santex gentle and all is fine have also used the nivea 24 and that seems fine too!!!

donnie · 22/07/2004 16:14

many deodorants contain aluminium which is actually poisonous in large doses.. There are some alum-free deodorants on the market which you will find in health food shops.

nutcracker · 22/07/2004 16:49

God i get the all the time. I never even thought it could be my deoderant. I thought it was due to shaving.

I use Sure at the mo, i'll have to look for another then.

Memder - I used to get this all the time, when using Sure roll-ons. I now use Sure cream, and am fine.

bran · 22/07/2004 22:09

I used to get that in the hot weather too memder, horribly painful so that I couldn't even put my arms down by my side. I've been using my current anti-perspirant for about 7 years and I hasn't happened since. It's Original Source roll-on. It's not always that easy to get, but I've bought it in Tescos and Waitrose.

Demented · 22/07/2004 23:19

Funny, I was going to start a similar thread to this. I think I have started reacting to Sure cream deodorant and haven't been using anything the last few days (seem to be barely sweating which is strange). I am concerned about the aluminium content of the deodorants. Does anyone know of a brand that doesn't contain aluminium but actually works (assuming I start to sweat again ).

ChicPea · 23/07/2004 00:49

There is an effective non-aluminium deodorant called ?Biolin? - shall check when I go upstairs and if I have misspelt it shall spell it correctly tomorrow. I buy it at Waitrose and I use it for peace of mind due to the breast cancer research linked to aluminium in deodorants.

misdee · 23/07/2004 08:28

i think pit rock (really gotta check the name on this) is aluminum free.

misdee · 23/07/2004 08:35

i've been spelling it wrong

pitrok deodrants

NottsMum · 23/07/2004 10:58

Kind of on the theme, my SIL suffered constantly suffered from v. painful cysts in her breasts which her consultant said it was caused by using deo straight after shaving (which blocks the ducts.) Apparently this is a common problem though I'd never heard of it.

On the deo front, I became very sensitive to most deos some years ago though every time I find one that I don't react to it usually stops being manufactured! Anyway, the one I'm currently using is Sanex Dermo Protector and that's been fine.

littlemissbossy · 23/07/2004 11:00

I too suffer, the only one I can use is Right Guard unperfumed... if I use anything else I'm red raw

gloworm · 23/07/2004 11:16

my dh always comes out in lumps when de uses most brands, even Sure, Simple etc. He how only uses alternative (aluminium free, perfume free, additave free) from health shop.
"Jason's" do a great range in either stick or roll-on, in lavender, aloe vera, tea tree(my fav).
Toms of Maine are another really good brand, their calendula one is lovely.
Dessert essence is quite good.

you can get them from a good health shop (prob not H&B) or online.

Demented · 23/07/2004 14:40

Thanks I'll try the health food shop first and if I don't find anything there I will order from the Pitrock site.

misdee · 23/07/2004 16:01

u can get pitrok in boots.
